Job Type: Part-Time, Internship (5–10 hours/week, largely self-paced)

FLSA Status: Hourly, $20 per hour (academic credit eligible; estimated credit may range from 1–3 depending on your institution)

Duration: Summer; Academic term (flexible, with potential to extend)

The Climate Democracy Initiative (CDI) leads efforts at the intersection of democracy, environmental sustainability, and community empowerment. We create inclusive spaces, tools, and learning opportunities where communities can shape just and resilient futures. 

This internship is designed as a learning opportunity for students excited about climate justice, storytelling, and digital communications. You’ll gain hands-on experience across social media, content creation, and analytics — all while being supported, mentored, and encouraged to try new things.

We’re looking for someone who brings curiosity, creativity, and some experience with content creation and digital tools. The position is partially driven by CDI's online reputation management needs and also by the candidate's interest in developing skills. Working within a development plan, the candidate will help maintain and improve CDI's online presence, develop engaging content for different platforms and profiles, support CDI's newsletter, and assist storytelling from programs and communities across the country. Hours are flexible and self-paced. Self-starters encouraged to apply.

1) Social Media Content Creation

• Develop and post platform-appropriate content for various social media accounts.
• Create engaging multimedia (graphics, short-form video, stories/reels) using Canva or similar tools.
• Create and maintain a content calendar aligned to program milestones and events.
• Monitor partner posts, hashtag trends and other analytics tied to climate, democracy, and sustainability and suggest creative, timely content ideas.

2) Community & Partner Engagement Support

• Support promotion of CDI events, announcements, and partner initiatives.
• Draft posts for coalition partners and coordinate tags/engagement to broaden reach.
• Participate in developing micro-campaigns that highlight diverse voices and community-led solutions.

3) Analytics & Optimization

• Recommend tests and experiments (timing, format, caption style) to improve performance.
• Assist in the compilation of monthly social media snapshots and reports.

4) General Communications Support

• Draft and edit short blog posts, newsletters, and press notes.
• Assist with copyediting for clarity, tone, and accessibility.
• Help ensure CDI’s voice and brand feel consistent — and consistently welcoming — across platforms.

• Experience creating content for at least two social platforms (e.g., Instagram, LinkedIn, TikTok).
• Strong writing and visual storytelling skills.
• Ability to work independently, communicate proactively, and manage tasks in a self-paced environment.
• Interest in sustainability, climate justice, democracy, and/or community engagement.

(Not required — just helpful!)

• Familiarity with accessibility best practices (alt text, color contrast, captions).
• Experience with Canva or Adobe tools; comfort with short-form video editing.
• Understanding of basic analytics and how to use insights to guide content improvements.
• Prior experience in nonprofit communications or campus/community organizing.

• Hands-on experience in nonprofit communications, content strategy, and web maintenance.
• A portfolio of published work (web pages, graphics, videos, campaign posts).
• Mentorship, feedback, and networking with CDI staff and partners.
• Eligibility for academic credit through your institution (if applicable).
