We are seeking a motivated and reliable Apprentice Commercial Refrigeration Technician to join our team. This entry-level apprenticeship position offers hands-on training and the opportunity to learn the installation, maintenance, troubleshooting, and repair of commercial refrigeration systems under the direct supervision of experienced technicians. Ideal for individuals interested in building a long-term career in the HVAC/R (Heating, Ventilation, Air Conditioning, and Refrigeration) industry, particularly focused on commercial applications such as supermarkets, restaurants, convenience stores, cold storage, and food service facilities.
This is a paid apprenticeship role combining on-the-job training with potential classroom or online instruction to prepare you for journey-level certification (e.g., EPA 608 certification and future licensing where required).
Key Responsibilities
- Assist experienced technicians with the installation, startup, maintenance, diagnosis, and repair of commercial refrigeration equipment, including:
- Self-contained units
- Walk-in coolers and freezers
- Reach-in refrigerators and freezers
- Rack systems
- Ice machines
- Display cases
- Help perform routine preventive maintenance tasks such as cleaning coils, checking refrigerant levels, inspecting electrical components, and lubricating moving parts.
- Support troubleshooting of refrigeration systems by observing and learning diagnostic techniques for issues related to compressors, evaporators, condensers, expansion valves, controls, and refrigerant leaks.
- Assist in recovering, recycling, and recharging refrigerants in compliance with EPA regulations (training provided).
- Handle basic pipe fitting, brazing/soldering, electrical wiring, and component replacement under supervision.
- Read and interpret basic blueprints, schematics, technical manuals, and work orders.
- Maintain accurate records of work performed, parts used, and time spent on jobs.
- Ensure all work is completed safely, following OSHA guidelines, company safety protocols, and industry best practices.
- Transport tools, parts, and equipment to job sites as needed.
- Provide excellent customer service by communicating clearly with clients and maintaining a professional appearance and demeanor.
- Participate in required training sessions, safety meetings, and progress evaluations.
Qualifications & Requirements
- High school diploma or GED equivalent required.
- Valid driver’s license with clean driving record (company vehicle provided for qualified candidates after probationary period).
- Ability to pass a background check and drug screening.
- Basic mechanical aptitude and interest in hands-on work.
- Willingness to learn and take direction from journeyman technicians.
- Physical ability to lift up to 50-75 lbs, work in confined spaces, climb ladders, and perform tasks in hot/cold environments or at heights.
- Strong attention to detail, reliability, and a positive attitude.
- Basic tools provided or tool allowance offered (progressive tool list as skills develop).
Preferred (but not required for entry-level apprentice)
- Previous experience in HVAC, refrigeration, mechanical, electrical, plumbing, or related trade (even entry-level or helper experience).
- Some postsecondary education or vocational training in HVAC/R.
- EPA Section 608 certification (or willingness to obtain quickly – training support provided).
