Position Title: Horizontal Directional Drilling (HDD) Operator / LocatorEmployment Type: Full-TimeReports To: General Manager / SuperintendentTravel: Required (project-based, multi-state)Location: Various project sites nationwide Position OverviewThe HDD Operator/Locator is responsible for the safe, efficient, and high-quality execution of horizontal directional drilling and auger bore operations across oil & gas, midstream pipeline, civil, and municipal infrastructure projects. This position requires strong technical skills, the ability to read/understand plans, operate drilling equipment, accurately locate drill heads, manage crews, and ensure all activities meet company, client, and regulatory standards.This individual will play a key role in field leadership, productivity, and maintaining a strong safety culture on every job. Key ResponsibilitiesDrilling & Locating OperationsOperate HDD rigs (various sizes), drill mud systems, vacuum systems, and support equipment.Perform precise locating and tracking of drill head using electronic locating systems.Execute bore plans, maintain bore paths, and ensure compliance with design elevations, tolerances, and utility crossing requirements.Operate auger bore equipment and perform pit setup, alignment, jacking, and spoil removal.Conduct pre-job walkdowns, site assessments, and utility locates.Perform drill string make-up, reaming, pullback, and completions.Crew Leadership & OversightLead and manage crews on site, ensuring productivity, professionalism, and adherence to safety expectations.Train crew members on drilling operations, locating procedures, equipment operation, and proper tool handling.Coordinate daily tasks with Superintendents, Project Managers, and client representatives.Ensure all daily reports, bore logs, safety documents, and production notes are completed accurately.Safety & ComplianceUphold and enforce company and client safety policies (OSHA, MSAs, operator qualifications, etc.).Conduct daily JHAs, toolbox meetings, and hazard assessments.Maintain equipment inspection logs and immediately address unsafe equipment conditions.Ensure all drilling fluids, spills, and environmental controls are managed according to regulatory standards. Equipment Care & Technical ExpertiseInspect, maintain, and troubleshoot HDD and auger bore equipment, including rigs, pumps, electronics, and support assets.Monitor drilling pressures, fluid returns, and ground conditions, adjusting plans as needed.Communicate equipment needs, repairs, and maintenance priorities to supervisors.Travel & ScheduleWilling and able to travel extensively to project locations across multiple states.Work extended hours, nights, weekends, and overtime as required by project schedules. Required Qualifications3–5 years operating HDD rigs and locating systems (DigiTrak, etc.).Experience with auger bore operations, pit setups, casing installation, and jacking systems.Proven ability to manage and lead field crews.Strong understanding of drilling fluid management, tooling selection, and ground conditions.Valid driver’s license (CDL preferred).Ability to read construction drawings, bore profiles, and alignment sheets.Strong communication and decision-making skills.Commitment to safety, quality, and professionalism. Preferred QualificationsExperience in oil & gas midstream, pipeline, integrity, or civil utilities.CDL with tanker endorsement.Certifications such as First Aid/CPR, OQ, Confined Space, or equipment-specific training.Ability to run additional heavy equipment (excavators, mini-excavators, skid steers, etc.). Physical RequirementsAbility to lift 50 lbs, work in trenches, pits, or uneven terrain.Comfortable working outdoors in all weather conditions.Ability to stand, walk, bend, and operate equipment for long durations.
