A caregiver who excels in this role will:
- Assist with direct and indirect patient care for one to two patients, such as rooming and taking vital signs, weight and pulse oximetry. If assigned to a closed unit, provide constant observation only for safety for three to four patients.
- Assure patient safety by ensuring that catheters, tubes or other medical equipment have not been removed or disconnected.
- Accompany and assist patients at all times, including transport, tests, transfers and ambulation.
- Identify and report changes in patient status to an RN or physician.
- Initiate CPR and other emergency measures as required.
- Acknowledge patient concerns and needs and notify appropriate staff for assistance when necessary.
- Complete all documentation and provide hand-off communication to caregivers responsible for the patient.
- High School Diploma or GED
- Heartsaver Level of Basic Life Support (BLS) through the American Heart Association (AHA) or American Red Cross within three months of hire
- Knowledge and understanding of basic patient care activities, such as basic hygiene, skin care, vital signs and other general hands-on patient care functions
- Requires full body motion to move and lift patients, manual finger dexterity with good eye-hand coordination; involves extensive standing and walking.
- Medium Work - Exerting 20 to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or 10 to 25 pounds of force frequently, and/or greater than negligible up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects.
- Physical Demand requirements are in excess of those for Light Work.
- Follows standard precautions using personal protective equipment as required.
