EXPERIENCE: A specific length of training and experience is not required, but you must show evidence of training or experience of sufficient scope and quality of your ability to do the work of this position. Evidence which demonstrates you possess the knowledge, skills, and ability to perform the duties of this position must be supported by detailed descriptions of such on your resume. Applicants will be rated in accordance with the OPM Federal Wage System Qualification Standards.

SCREEN-OUT ELEMENT: Your qualifications will first be evaluated against the prescribed screen out element, which usually appears as question 1 in the on-line questionnaire. Those applicants who appear to possess at least the minimal acceptable qualification requirement are considered for further rating; those who do not are rated ineligible and are eliminated. The potential eligibles are then rated against the remainder of the Job Elements:

  • Technical Practices
  • Troubleshooting
  • Use and Maintain Tools and Equipment


Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religions; spiritual; community; student; social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

Physical Effort: Work assignments require moderate physical effort. The employee handles objects weighing 45 pounds and occasionally carries objects weighing 45 pounds and over for considerable distances. Assistance is usually available with heavy items. The work is performed in a sitting position for extended periods. Frequent standing, walking, bending, crouching, reaching, and stooping is required. Routine climbing and work in high places on ladders and roof tops is be required.

Working Conditions: Work is usually performed in dimly lighted, heated, and ventilated areas. Most equipment is fixed in place and it is commonly necessary to work in warehouse or industrial areas exposed to loud noises, heat or cold, fumes, etc. The employee is subjected to injuries, such as electric shock, cuts and bruises, as well as burns caused by electrical energy or soldering irons. The hazards of working around moving belts, gears, rollers, etc. are constant.

Responsibilities:

This position is aligned under the Preventative Maintenance and Repair Shop (PM&R), Facilities Management Division, at the Clement J. Zablocki Medical Center, Milwaukee, WI (695) - a Level 1a Complexity VHA Facility. The work involves operations, repair and maintenance of industrial equipment and components throughout the medical center.

Major Duties:
  • Incumbent independently lubricates, tests, cleans, adjusts, inspects, diagnoses trouble and safely shuts down equipment for routine and emergencies for repairs.
  • The incumbent disassembles and repairs general industrial plant machinery, equipment and systems such as pumps, hydraulic lifts, gear reducers, conveyor systems, pneumatic tube systems, air handling systems, exhaust units, reducing valves, mechanical power transmissions, emergency power generating equipment, gasoline driven engines coupled to pumps and other auxiliary equipment, kitchen equipment, and other equipment or systems.
  • Replaces bearings on all types of equipment as needed.
  • Determines the nature and extent of repairs and makes necessary repairs.
  • Reassembles and installs equipment once repaired.
  • Independently disassemble, move and relocate various pieces of equipment and machinery and install new equipment.
  • Installs, replaces, adjusts and sets various regulating and safety devices such as meters, gauges, governors and automatic alarms.
Work Schedule: Full-time, Monday-Friday, 12:00 PM - 8:30 PM and may be required to be present to provide off-hours support for utility outages, maintenance and projects support, etc. This position is eligible for an Alternate Work Schedule (AWS) of 8 - 9 hour days, 1 - 8 hour day and one day off a pay period being a Tuesday, Wednesday or Thursday.
