Sr. Buyer / Commodity Manager

Position Summary

The Senior Buyer / Commodity Manager is responsible for developing and executing sourcing strategies, managing supplier relationships, placing purchase orders, negotiating commercial agreements, and ensuring the uninterrupted supply of materials supporting the manufacture of medical devices. This role partners closely with Engineering, Quality, Operations and Finance to drive cost reduction, supplier performance, quality, and supply continuity.

The ideal candidate has a strong background in strategic sourcing within a regulated manufacturing environment and possesses exceptional analytical, negotiation, process development and supplier management skills.

Key Responsibilities

Strategic Sourcing

• Develop and implement commodity strategies for assigned categories including:
• Contract manufacturing
• Plastics and injection molded parts
• Electronic components
• PCBs and PCBAs
• Machined components
• Packaging
• Lead supplier selection through RFQs, supplier evaluations, and total cost analysis.
• Identify alternate sources and/or strategies to reduce supply chain risk.

Supplier Management

• Own strategic supplier relationships
• Conduct regular business reviews.
• Drive supplier corrective actions alongside our Quality team when performance gaps exist.
• Monitor supplier financial health and business continuity risks.

Procurement

• Purchase production materials supporting manufacturing schedules.
• Create or improve procurement workflows and procedures.
• Manage inventory levels while balancing service levels and working capital.
• Expedite critical shortages.
• Support New Product Introduction (NPI) sourcing activities.
• Coordinate engineering changes and product lifecycle management.

Cost Reduction

• Develop annual cost savings initiatives through:
• Supplier negotiations
• Value engineering
• Design for manufacturability
• Dual sourcing
• Inventory optimization
• Meet or exceed annual savings targets. 

Required Qualifications

Education

Bachelor's degree in:

• Supply Chain Management
• Business
• Engineering
• Operations Management
• or related discipline

Equivalent experience may be considered.

Experience

• 5 years of purchasing or strategic sourcing experience
• 5 years in medical device, life sciences, aerospace, or another highly regulated manufacturing environment
• Experience managing international suppliers
• Strong understanding of ERP/MRP systems (NetSuite preferred)
• Advanced Microsoft Excel skills

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience sourcing electronics and electromechanical assemblies
• Experience supporting New Product Introduction (NPI)
• Contract negotiation experience
