Cost Accountant

Job Description: Cost Accountant Salary Range: $75,000 to $90,000Position OverviewThe Cost Accountant will play a key role in supporting project controls and financial accuracy across the organization. This role is responsible for monitoring project costs, preparing financial and project performance reports, and performing system validation tasks to ensure transactions are recorded accurately and consistently. The ideal candidate will have strong analytical skills, attention to detail, and experience working in a project-based or construction-related environment.Key ResponsibilitiesProject Controls & Cost ManagementMonitor, track, and analyze project costs throughout each phase of the project lifecycle.Maintain accurate cost data including labor, materials, subcontractors, and overhead allocations.Assist project managers in reviewing budgets, forecasts, and cost-to-complete estimates.Identify cost variances and support corrective action planning.Ensure timely and accurate entry of cost-related data into project control systems.Project ReportingPrepare regular project financial reports, including budget vs. actual analysis, cost trend summaries, and variance explanations.Support monthly project review meetings by providing reliable cost data and analytical insights.Develop dashboards or reporting tools to improve real-time visibility of financial performance.Assist with the preparation of presentations and documentation for internal stakeholders.System Validation & Transaction AccuracyPerform routine validations within accounting and project management systems to ensure data integrity.Review and reconcile transactions (AP, AR, purchase orders, work orders, journal entries, etc.) to confirm accuracy and proper coding.Investigate discrepancies and coordinate with relevant departments to resolve issues.Support process improvements regarding data flow, accuracy, and system usage.QualificationsBachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, Business, or a related field.2–4 years of experience in cost accounting, project accounting, or similar roles (construction or engineering industry experience preferred).Strong understanding of cost structures, budgeting, and project financial cycles.Experience with ERP or project management systems; ability to learn new platforms quickly.Advanced proficiency in Excel; experience with reporting tools a plus.Excellent analytical skills, attention to detail, and problem-solving ability.Strong communication skills and ability to collaborate with cross-functional teams.Additional CompetenciesAbility to manage multiple projects and deadlines.High degree of professionalism, integrity, and confidentiality.Continuous improvement mindset and willingness to suggest and implement process enhancements.
