Community Organizer - Long Term, Full Time

Clean Water Action is a non-profit organization focusing on campaigns related to water access, water quality, and environmental justice. With over half a million members nationwide and 160,000 members in Michigan, Clean Water Action's impact is far-reaching. We work to empower people to take action to protect America's waters, build healthy communities and to make democracy work for all of us. Our recent victories include passing a drinking water standard for PFAs in Michigan and funding lead pipe replacement across the state. By joining our team, you will be at the forefront of creating a cleaner, healthier future for all.

Currently, we are working with the Michiganders for Money Out of Politics coalition to pass a Michigan state law that comprehensively prohibits monopoly utilities like DTE and Consumers Energy from making state or local political contributions. From issues like holding polluters accountable to taking the big, bold steps that we need to address the climate crisis, political money from major corporations has been a consistent roadblock to passing people-centered policy. We can no longer allow monopoly corporations and corporations seeking state contracts to buy their way out of accountability and drown out the voice of the people.

For 50 years Clean Water Action has succeeded in winning some of the nation's most important environmental protections through grassroots organizing, expert policy research and political advocacy focused on holding elected officials accountable to the public. As part of our staff, you would organize communities around these vital issues. Responsibilities include one-on-one communication, fundraising, dispersing information, volunteer recruitment, gathering petition signatures, educating supporters about voting, and good record keeping.

We look for candidates who have strong communication skills, and who possess good attention to detail. Candidates must possess cultural competence and a commitment to racial justice and equity, and should have an interest in non-profit or campaign work, policy, or politics. Ideal candidates enjoy connecting with people as part of their daily work and are motivated to make real change on these issues. Multilingual candidates strongly encouraged to apply. We do provide extensive training on the job responsibilities and on the issues we cover. The hours for the work are from 2pm to 10:30pm, Monday through Friday. Pay is $20/hr plus performance bonuses. Though we do hire part time staff, we are currently looking for candidates interested in full time, long term positions starting immediately. We provide a comprehensive benefits package including medical, dental, vision, and life insurance, and 401k; opportunities for travel within Michigan and throughout the US; and the potential for long term growth within the organization.

These are in person positions. Because we value our staff members' health and the health of the communities we organize, all staff utilizing our office are required to wear masks while together in indoor spaces. N95 or KN95 masks and sanitizer are provided.
