Senior Director of Architecture

The Senior Director of Architecture provides senior-level technical leadership and architectural direction for Clean Harbors’ enterprise platforms and applications. This role is accountable for ensuring architectural solutions align with enterprise standards, platform strategy, and business objectives, while enabling secure, scalable, and resilient systems.

Responsibilities

• Architecture Strategy & Governance
• Ability to innovate and introduce proven technological trends into CLH ecosystems
• Apply to innovate and apply proven and enforce enterprise architecture standards, patterns, and principles established by Clean Harbors Architecture leadership.
• Lead and participate in architecture design reviews, ensuring solutions meet security, performance, scalability, and reliability requirements.
• Ensure architectural decisions are documented, communicated, and aligned with enterprise direction.
• Identify architectural risks and escalate when enterprise alignment or platform integrity is at risk.
• Solution Architecture & Delivery Leadership
• Own solution architecture for complex, cross-platform initiatives supporting Clean Harbors business operations.
• Design application, integration, data, and deployment architectures that support enterprise scale and long-term sustainability.
• Translate business objectives and non-functional requirements into clear, implementable technical designs.
• Ensure architectural intent is realized through delivery by working closely with Engineering and Platform teams.
• Continuous Improvement & Operational Excellence
• Identify technical debt, modernization needs, and architectural gaps across platforms.
• Champion improvements that enhance production stability, operational readiness, and maintainability.
• Support ongoing modernization efforts in alignment with Clean Harbors technology standards and strategy.
• Strategic Alignment & Business Partnership
• Align architectural decisions with platform vision, roadmaps, and long-term business strategy.
• Serve as a senior technical advisor to Platform Owners, Product Owners, and Engineering leadership.
• Balance near-term delivery needs with long-term architectural health and enterprise consistency.
• Cross-Platform Collaboration & Influence
• Partner across platforms and teams to reduce duplication and fragmentation.
• Influence technical direction without direct authority through credibility, clarity, and strong design rationale.
• Communicate architectural concepts effectively to both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
  

Qualifications

• Bachelors degree in Computer Science/Computer Engineering/Related field required (Masters degree preferred)
• 10-15 years of Extensive experience designing and delivering enterprise‑scale software solutions.
• Strong expertise in application architecture, integrations, data flows, and deployment models.
• Demonstrated ability to apply non‑functional requirements (security, performance, reliability) to complex systems.
• Proven ability to collaborate across teams and influence technical outcomes.
• Experience working within formal architecture governance or review processes.
• Experience with platform‑based or domain‑oriented architectures.
• Exposure to enterprise modernization initiatives (legacy decoupling, cloud adoption, system integration).
• Experience mentoring architects or senior engineers
• Demonstrated experience in leading architecture team(s) in delivering distributed solutions
• Experience with architecting distributed systems which are highly scalable, available and fault tolerance. Understand and are conversant in software architecture and design patterns;
• Experience with architecting applications for the Azure using App Services, Docker, Kubernetes, Azure SQL, Cosmos DB, Azure Functions, Event Grid, Service bus etc;
• Experience Implementing Azure Enterprise Scale Landing Zone framework;
• Expert level experience in Microsoft Technologies e.g. Microsoft .Net Framework v5.0 or above, C#, ASP.NET, SQL Server, Web API, MVC & Angular;
• Strong understanding of concepts like SOA, Domain Driven Design, Event Sourcing and REST API;
• Strong experience in the database systems and design;
• Knowledge and experience working with relational databases including development, troubleshooting, and performance optimization;
• Knowledge in other data stores capabilities;
• Experience with SOA/REST Services/Web API/Microservices;
• Experience in Continuous Integration and Delivery and other DevOps practices;
• Demonstrated experience with working on Security and CISO team(s) in building secure applications & fault redundant systems;
• Knowledge of data structures, algorithms, object-oriented design, design patterns, and performance/scale considerations;
