Job Summary
The Head Men's Basketball Coach is responsible for providing leadership and direction for all aspects of the Clayton State University Men's Basketball program. This position oversees the development of a competitive NCAA Division II program that supports the University's mission of student success, social mobility, and community engagement. The head coach is accountable for recruiting, coaching, academic oversight, compliance, program administration, and fostering a positive student/athlete experience consistent with Clayton State University values and the standards of the NCAA and Peach Belt Conference.
Responsibilities
Program Leadership and Coaching
- Plan, organize, and direct all phases of the Men's Basketball program, including practices, competitions, and off-season development.
- Lead and mentor student-athletes to achieve competitive excellence while emphasizing sportsmanship, integrity, and personal growth.
- Develop and implement game strategies, scouting plans, and performance analysis.
- Supervise, evaluate, and support assistant coaching staff and any program support personnel.
Recruiting and Retention
- Identify, recruit, evaluate, and retain academically and athletically qualified student-athletes in compliance with NCAA, Peach Belt Conference, and University policies.
- Manage recruiting travel, official and unofficial visits, communication, and scholarship allocation.
- Maintain roster management strategies that support competitive success, academic progress, and retention.
Student-Athlete Academic Success and Development
- Monitor and support student-athlete academic progress, retention, and degree completion in collaboration with academic support staff.
- Promote holistic student-athlete development, including leadership, life skills, and career readiness.
- Serve as a mentor and role model, reinforcing accountability, discipline, and personal responsibility.
Compliance and Governance
- Ensure full compliance with all NCAA Division II, Peach Belt Conference, University System of Georgia, and Clayton State University rules and regulations.
- Participate in compliance education programs and maintain accurate documentation related to recruiting, eligibility, and playing/practice seasons.
- Communicate regularly with the Athletics Compliance Office and cooperate fully with audits and reviews.
Program Administration and Operations
- Manage the Men's Basketball program budget, including travel, equipment, recruiting, and operational expenses.
- Oversee scheduling, travel logistics, equipment needs, and facility usage.
- Participate in fundraising, executing camps, clinics, and external engagement activities that support departmental revenue generation.
- Contribute to marketing, promotional efforts, and fan engagement initiatives.
University and Community Engagement
- Represent Clayton State University positively on campus, within the Peach Belt Conference, and in the broader community.
- Engage alumni, donors, and community partners in support of the Men's Basketball program.
- Participate in University, Athletics Department, and conference meetings and events as required.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree from an accredited institution.
- Demonstrated successful coaching experience at the collegiate level or equivalent.
- Strong leadership, communication, and organizational skills.
- Commitment to academic excellence, compliance, and student-athlete well-being.
Preferred Qualifications
- Master's degree.
- Head coaching experience at the NCAA Division II level or higher.
- Experience competing in or working within the Peach Belt Conference or comparable NCAA Division II conference.
- Demonstrated success in fundraising, community engagement, or external relations.
- Experience working with student populations.
