Deputy Sheriff - Court Security Deputy

The Court Security Deputy is a Sworn member. The Court Security Deputies are responsible for maintaining order and security of the Clay County Courthouse, its adjacent parking areas, the safety of all its occupants (judges, court personnel, citizens and employer), serving and executing enforceable court orders, court proceedings and the care, custody and control of inmates. An individual serving in this role responds to volatile circumstances while remaining mindful of how their actions reflect on the whole agency of the Sheriff’s Office. This individual must demonstrate professionalism with superior customer service, which requires skills in understanding human behavior, which influences or causes behavioral changes critical for success while providing general information or guidance; understand the knowledge of specialized equipment, techniques, methods, and procedures while involving the use of specialized skills in courtroom security. Court Security Deputies are also cross-trained and hold the responsibilities of the Administrative Building Security Deputy, Bailiff Deputy, and Bailiff Control Room Operator.

Duties

• Performs all duties as outlined in the job description of a Deputy Sheriff.
• Responds to all emergencies, incidents or reported crimes which take place in the courthouse, administration building and in their adjacent parking areas in accordance with agency policy and procedures.
• Conducts security rounds in the courthouse to ensure safety and security are maintained.
• Review daily roster assignments from the unit supervisor.
• Prepares courtroom for daily judicial proceedings.
• Arrange for additional inmates to appear before the judge if necessary.
• Receive/escort inmates from the Jail and place them in the coordinating holding cells before the start of court.
• Provides care, custody, and control of inmates/detainees attending court, pursuant to agency policy and procedures.
• Controls, restraints, and subdues inmates/offenders/detainees with the use of the proper restraint techniques, control device, and/or secondary weapons without causing undue pain or injury; and documents and notifies the appropriate supervisory staff in accordance with agency policy and procedures.
• Mediates and successfully resolves disputes involving; citizens / inmates / offenders /detainees utilizing the minimum force required, implementing or recommending the appropriate disciplinary actions consistent with agency policy and procedures.
• Controls movement of parties/inmates appearing for courtroom proceedings.
• Takes persons into custody as a result of criminal investigation or when directed by active capias, writ, custody order, or judge’s instruction.
• Ensures fingerprints and/or DNA is taken from individuals as required.
• Receive/escort inmates from the holding cells back to the Jail at the completion of court, advising bailiff control of the escort.
• Responds/coordinates a response in an appropriate and timely manner to all inmate injuries/complaints/grievances and monitors the incident/issue to ensure appropriate resolution in accordance with agency policy and procedures.
• Reports fights, disorders, or any unusual activities to the supervisor, detailing location, type of incident, number of inmates/offenders/detainees/persons involved, and request for assistance if needed pursuant to agency policies; follows established procedures and/or verbal instructions.
• Notifies designated persons immediately during an emergency situation, accurately describing the situation and location and providing additional information and assistance as needed while maintaining the safety of all personnel in the affected area.
• Conducts a search of the holding cells for assigned courtrooms at the close of each day and advises bailiff control of the all-clear.

Salary : $26 - $30
