Job Summary

This position is responsible for performing a variety of skilled work in the repair, overhaul, preventive maintenance and operational readiness of public safety equipment and emergency vehicles.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Plan and schedule maintenance, both preventive and discretionary to ensure compliance with all applicable vehicle and equipment standards, rules, regulations, and all County policies are understood by mechanics, service attendants, and aids in enforcing all safety regulations as well as determining operational readiness of public safety equipment
  • Perform routine maintenance and repair of all department vehicles and equipment including comprehensive apparatus repair, electrical system diagnostics and hydraulic system repairs.
  • Obtains costs by using available warranty and arranges for service work when available by evaluating services and parts options.
  • Maintains inventory of supplies and stock. Places orders and verifies receipt.
  • Stays current in field knowledge by reviewing publications and participating in various trainings.
  • Inspects work being carried out by service attendants during routine vehicle servicing tasks.
  • Assists/advises mechanics with repairs of all vehicle and equipment.
  • Acts as Service Writer to inspect completed work orders and assures quality professional work is received from internal and external services.
  • Assist with the development of specifications for new fire apparatus and equipment as necessary.
  • Creates, directs, and monitors outsourced contractual work.
  • Gain and analyze data, prepare reports, maintain records, and make recommendations regarding fleet and equipment management.
  • Will be subject to call-out assignments when off-duty as assigned or necessary to the department.
  • In case of emergency or crisis situation (hurricane, flood, etc.) position is required to respond/perform emergency and recovery duties as assigned by the County Manager or designee.
  • During an emergency or crisis situation, this position will may be required to be present at the Emergency Operation Center (EOC) to provide assistance while activated.
  • Performs other duties as assigned

Minimum Requirements

  • High School Diploma or GED equivalent
  • Valid State of Florida Commercial Driver's License with a clean driving record (Class B minimum Preferred)
  • A Commercial Driver's License Class B minimum is preferred.

MECHANIC I

Starting Pay: $20.41/hr

  • One (1) year of related experience or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Basic knowledge of diagnostic equipment and personal computers.
  • Level I Emergency Vehicle Technician (EVT) is preferred.
  • Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) Certifications in inspections, maintenance and testing of fire apparatus, design and performance of fire apparatus and truck or automotive skill areas are desirable.

MECHANIC II

Starting Pay: $24.31/hr

  • Three (3) years of related experience or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Experience with diagnostic equipment and personal computers.
  • Level II Emergency Vehicle Technician (EVT) is preferred.
  • Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) Certifications in inspections, maintenance and testing of fire apparatus, design and performance of fire apparatus and truck or automotive skill areas are desirable.

MECHANIC III

Starting Pay: $25.76/hr

  • One (1) year certificate from a college or Technical school, and five (5) years related experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience is required.
  • Experience with diagnostic equipment and personal computers.
  • Master Level Emergency Vehicle Technician (EVT) is preferred.
  • Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) certifications in inspections, maintenance and testing of fire apparatus, design and performance of fire apparatus and truck or automotive skill areas is desirable.

  • Any combination of education and experience may be substituted, so long as it provides the desired skills, knowledge and abilities to perform the essential functions of the job

Supplemental Information

Regular attendance is an essential function of this position.

A good understanding of Microsoft Suite applications, including MS Word and MS Outlook is required.

Ability to maintain preventive maintenance programs, policies, and procedures.

Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.

Ability to write routine reports and correspondence. Ability to speak effectively to internal and external customer, vendors, etc.

This is a Public Safety position that requires availability during emergency and disaster situations.

Attendance per established schedules with applicable on call availability is required.

This position frequently communicates with supervisors and other staff to safely execute the maintenance of County vehicles. Must be able to accurately convey and perceive information in these situations.

Must be able to perceive, inspect, and assess safety and maintenance instructions and equipment to execute essential maintenance duties. Must be able to distinguish colors, depths and details to ensure safe and accurate equipment repairs, installations and maintenance.

Working Environment and Physical Demands

Frequently positions self to maintain vehicles, including under vehicles and in small interior spaces.

Must be able to move objects up to 70 pounds, and use abdominal and lower back muscles to provide support over time without fatigue. Constant movement and use of limbs; this position requires good manual dexterity, coordination and stamina.

Regularly works around moving parts, in an outdoor environment which may expose the worker to inclement weather, excessive heat and humidity, pollution, fumes and airborne particles.

The employee occasionally works in high, precarious places and may occasionally be exposed to risk of electrical shock in carrying out maintenance duties.

The noise level is usually moderate.
