College/Career Advisor 

 

 

Job Summary

Under general direction, the College/Career Advisor supports the recruitment, enrollment, and success of students in the Talent Search and Upward Bound programs. The Advisor assesses student needs and develops individualized service plans to support academic achievement, career exploration, and post-secondary enrollment in alignment with federal TRIO program regulations. Services include academic, career, and college guidance; financial aid and skill-building workshops; and assistance with college applications.

The Advisor builds and maintains strong relationships with teachers, counselors, administrators, community partners, and parents to create a network of support for participating students. For the 2025–26 year, this position will also assist with Career Connected Learning (CCL) initiatives that align with program goals and expand outreach to a broader population of students in Clatsop County. The position is fully grant-funded and subject to the availability of grant funds.

 

Essential Duties

  • Provide individual advising and group workshops on topics including academic success, college and career planning, financial aid, communication skills, and personal development.
  • Assess student needs and develop targeted curricula, workshops, and resources to support student achievement and program objectives.
  • Collaborate with school administrators, counselors, and teachers to implement TRIO services and activities tailored to the needs of each school.
  • Establish and maintain positive relationships with schools, businesses, and community organizations to promote program awareness and create partnership opportunities.
  • Engage parents and guardians through communication, resources, and events that encourage active participation in their child’s education and college goals.
  • Maintain accurate and confidential records of student participation and progress in accordance with federal and institutional guidelines.
  • Recruit and enroll new students who meet program eligibility criteria.
  • Participate in program evaluation, data collection, and continuous improvement processes.
  • Support the planning and implementation of Career Connected Learning (CCL) activities such as career panels, assisting seniors with their transition to Clatsop Community College, hosting activity-based career programs in classrooms, and coordinating guest speakers.
  • Perform other duties as assigned to support program operations.

 

 

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education and Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in education, counseling, guidance, social work, or related field.
  • Two years of full-time professional experience working in education, advising, or youth development, preferably with students from disadvantaged backgrounds.
  • Equivalent combinations of education and experience will be considered.

 

Desirable Qualification

  • Bilingual in English and Spanish.
  • Background or life experience similar to that of the program’s target population.

 

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Knowledge of principles and practices of academic and career advising.
  • Understanding of factors influencing student access, persistence, and success in education.
  • Familiarity with local school systems and community resources.
  • Ability to develop and deliver engaging curricula and workshops.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills, including the ability to build rapport with students and stakeholders.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Skill in using data to inform program decisions.
  • Proficiency with standard office software, email, calendars, and student data systems.
  • Commitment to the values of equity, inclusion, and student-centered service.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Frequent travel to schools and community sites within Clatsop County.
  • Must possess a valid driver’s license and reliable transportation.
  • Ability to drive or learn to drive a 12-passenger van in compliance with college vehicle operation and safety standards.
  • Ability to ride on school buses and participate in extended (12–15 hour) field trips with students.
  • Sufficient mobility to work in varied school and community environments.
