Overall Purpose

The job of Federal Programs Tutor is done for the purpose of providing supplemental education and support services to migrant children and neglected and delinquent children and their families.

Essential Functions

  • Regularly communicates with teachers of children served to identify areas of academic need.
  • Makes home visits as necessary for recruitment, identification of support service needs and provision of those services, communications from school and/or MEA, etc.
  • Arranges for or makes referrals to other agencies for necessary support services provisions.
  • Provides emergency support services as necessary.
  • Informs the Director of Federal Programs and the Homeless Education Liaison of services provided and needs of migrant and neglected and delinquent children and families.
  • Maintains required documentation of services.
  • Attends staff meetings scheduled by Georgia Department of Education Migrant Education Agency.
  • Maintains record book and student files according to specifications of Georgia Department of Education.
  • Keeps updated list of students and promptly informs Georgia Department of Education of any changes on the Withdrawal/Information Change form.
  • Addresses the special educational needs of children giving priority to children whose education has been interrupted during the school year and who are failing or at risk of failing.
  • Coordinates supportive health services, including medical, dental and nutritional services in cooperation with other agencies.
  • Communicates regularly with parents and teachers.
  • Assists parents to be involved in their children’s education at home and as partners with teachers.
  • Serves as a translator between the parents of student that qualify for migrant education program services and the schools.
  • Arranges for transportation to medical appointments, if needed.

  • Performs other related duties as assigned for the purpose of ensuring the efficient and effective functioning of the work unit.

Required to perform multiple tasks with a need to occasionally upgrade skills in order to meet changing job conditions. Specific skill based competencies required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include: preparing and maintaining accurate records; using pertinent software applications; and instructional skills.

  • Knowledge-based Competencies

Required to perform basic math, including calculations using fractions, percentages, and/or ratios; read technical information, compose a variety of documents, and/or facilitate group discussions; and analyze situations to define issues and draw conclusions. Specific knowledge based competencies required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include: age appropriate activities/behaviors; assessment instruments and techniques; classroom instructional media and technology; community resources; cultural differences of student population; job-related codes/laws/rules/regulations/policies; knowledge of community resources; methods of instruction and training; recordkeeping and record retention practices; school safety and security practices; stages of child development; treatment modalities.

  • Ability-based Competencies

Required to schedule activities, meetings, and/or events; gather, collate, and/or classify data; and use basic, job-related equipment. Flexibility is required to work with others in a variety of circumstances; work with data utilizing defined and similar processes; and operate equipment using standardized methods. Ability is also required to work with a wide diversity of individuals; work with similar types of data; and utilize job-related equipment. Problem solving is required to identify issues and create action plans. Problem solving with data requires independent interpretation of guidelines; and problem solving with equipment is limited to moderate. Specific ability based competencies required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include: providing direction and leadership; communicating with persons of varied backgrounds; maintaining confidentiality; and adapting to changing priorities.

 

Requirements

High school diploma or GED equivalent

Bilingual and bi-literate in English and Spanish preferred

Valid Georgia Driver’s license

Reliable transportation for travel between sites

 

Physical Requirements

The usual and customary methods of performing the job's functions require the following physical demands: occasional lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling, frequent stooping, kneeling, crouching, and/or crawling and significant fine finger dexterity.

 

Generally the job requires 25% sitting, 40% walking, and 35% standing.
