Overall Purpose

The job of CCSD Police Officer is done for the purpose/s of providing support to the instructional process with specific responsibilities for identifying potential welfare, safety, and/or student security, personnel, visitor and/or site problems; maintaining safety at school site by enforcing federal and state laws, disciplinary policies and regulations; conducting criminal investigations; coordinating public safety resources; communicating information and responding to inquiries; and providing emergency care to students and other individuals.

Essential Functions

  • Performs the following essential functions as dictated by the area of assignment (campus, gang task force, theft investigations, etc.)
  • Arrests individuals engaging in illegal activities for the purpose of apprehending suspects to prevent further illegal activities.
  • Assists community law enforcement personnel (criminal, administrative, etc.) for the purpose of supporting them in the completion of their work activities within the school environment.
  • Assists in administering first aid to students, staff, and/or visitors (emergency situations, etc.) for the purpose of providing immediate emergency medical care.
  • Collaborates with community agencies (law enforcement, courts, health care, etc.) for the purpose of addressing individual cases and/or taking action regarding investigations, criminal activities, gang activities, vandalism, etc. for the safety and security of the school site.
  • Communicates safety and security policies, and enforcement procedures (students, staff, visitors, etc.) for the purpose of ensuring their understanding of such information and the potential consequences of violation.
  • Escorts students, assigned personnel, and/or visitors (Board of Education meetings, athletic events, incident scenes, etc.) for the purpose of providing direction and ensuring their safety and providing site security.
  • Investigates potential campus crimes and/or student related community incidents (criminal, administrative, school transportation, etc.) for the purpose of resolving conflicts, taking appropriate action, and/or referring to outside agency for resolution.
  • Monitors student behavior during and between assigned periods, and at student events (lunch room, classrooms with substitutes, detention, dances, home games, etc.) for the purpose of ensuring student compliance with established guidelines, regulatory requirements, maintaining a safe and positive learning environment, and secure facility.
  • Participates in unit meetings, in-service training, workshops, etc. (new laws, policing procedures, etc.) for the purpose of conveying and/or gathering information required to perform job functions. 
  • Patrols school facilities (grounds, roads, buildings, adjacent areas, parking lots, etc.) for the purpose of providing visibility, maintaining security, and deterring criminal activities.
  • Prepares a variety of documents (incident reports, activity logs, memos, letters, procedures, etc.) for the purpose of documenting activities, providing written reference, and/or conveying information.
  • Presents information in a variety of settings (classrooms, parent meetings, staff orientations, student groups, or classrooms, etc.) for the purpose of informing individuals of campus security guidelines, and law enforcement procedures and/or individual rights.
  • Provides traffic and parking control (daily school hours, games, etc.) for the purpose of maintaining efficient traffic flow and use of parking lot/s.
  • Responds to a variety of situations (accidents, injuries, vandalism, suspicious activities, alarms, etc.) for the purpose of taking the appropriate action to resolve immediate safety and/or security concerns.
  • Responds to inquiries from a variety of sources regarding campus security issues (students, teachers, administrators, parents, city police officers, etc.) for the purpose of providing information, direction, and/or referral for addressing inquiry.
  • Testifies in court proceedings (administrative, criminal, etc.) for the purpose of providing information regarding alleged illegal activity.

  • Performs other related duties as assigned for the purpose of ensuring the efficient and effective functioning of the work unit.

 

Competencies 

  • Skills-based Competencies 

Required to perform single, technical tasks with a potential need to upgrade skills in order to meet changing job conditions. Specific skill based competencies required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include: administering first aid and CPR; handling hazardous materials; operating standard office equipment; preparing and maintaining accurate records; and utilizing pertinent software applications.

 

  • Knowledge-based Competencies

Required to perform basic math, including calculations using fractions, percentages, and/or ratios; review and interpret highly technical information, write technical materials, and/or speak persuasively to implement desired actions; and analyze situations to define issues and draw conclusions. Specific knowledge based competencies required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include: pertinent codes, regulations, and laws; safety practices and procedures; and techniques for defusing hostile situations.

 

  • Ability-based Competencies

Required to schedule activities and/or meetings; gather and/or collate data; and use basic, job-related equipment. Flexibility is required to independently work with others in a wide variety of circumstances; work with data utilizing defined and similar processes; and operate equipment using defined methods. Ability is also required to work with a significant diversity of individuals and/or groups; work with a variety of data; and utilize job-related equipment.  Problem solving is required to analyze issues and create action plans. Problem solving with data requires independent interpretation of guidelines; and problem solving with equipment is limited to moderate. Specific ability based competencies required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include: communicating with diverse groups including those suspected of unlawful activities; establishing and maintaining effective working relationships; maintaining confidentiality; and working with frequent interruptions.

 

Requirements

High school diploma or GED equivalent

Associate’s Degree preferred

Minimum three (3) years law enforcement experience

Valid P.O.S.T. (Peace Officers Standards and Training) certification

Valid Georgia Driver’s License

 

Physical Requirements

The usual and customary methods of performing the job's functions require the following physical demands: some lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling, some stooping, kneeling, crouching, and/or crawling and significant fine finger dexterity. 

 

Generally, the job requires 20% sitting, 40% walking, and 40% standing.

Annual renewal of P.O.S.T. (Peace Officers Standards and Training) certification

Valid Georgia Driver’s License
