JOB SUMMARY

The epidemiologist will coordinate the investigation, data collection, and analysis of epidemiological situations to identity patterns and causes of diseases and lead public health responses by developing strategies for disease prevention and control.

EDUCATION & QUALIFICATIONS

Bachelor’s degree required. Master’s degree in public health or related field preferred. Completion of at least one graduate-level course in epidemiology or biostatistics, pre-employment or withing twelve (12) months of hire required.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

· Coordinate and lead the investigation, collection, and analysis of epidemiological data related to communicable disease and non-communicable diseases

· Monitor and interpret local and state disease surveillance data using systems such as ODRS, NORS, EpiCenter, and the ODH Data Warehouse to detect, investigate, and report disease outbreaks

· Provide expert technical guidance on epidemiologic methods, data collection techniques, statistical analysis, and interpretation of findings

· Conduct and support timely surveillance and response activities, including syndromic surveillance, cluster detection, and evaluation of reporting timeliness and completeness

· Collaborate with public health partners including hospitals, physicians, schools and local health departments to ensure accurate and coordinated case investigations, contact tracing, and outbreak response

· Ensure quality control and data integrity by applying standardized case definitions and best practices in data validation and entry

· Develop and deliver presentations, written reports, and visual data summaries (e.g., charts, maps, graphs) to diverse audiences including public health professionals, stakeholders and the general public

· Lead and assist in developing protocols for disease investigation, outbreak response, and health surveillance systems, including cross-jurisdictional coordination

· Actively participate in and support the agency’s Incident Command Structure and regional epidemiology response teams

· Collect and analyze health status data related to health behaviors, risk factors, social determinants, and health outcomes for Community Health Assessments and other strategic public health initiatives

· Provide consultation and support to program staff and community partners in using data for performance tracking, program evaluation, and public health planning

· Remain available 24/7 for urgent consultations and off-site investigations using agency provided technology

· Participate in community engagement projects, such as the Clark County Youth Risk Behavior Survey, health equity data analysis, and regional health research initiatives

· Attend and contribute to in-house and community meetings; represent the agency in epidemiology-related committees, work groups, and training events

· Support accreditation and quality improvement activities by contributing to documentation, assessment, and evaluation efforts

· Maintain current knowledge of public health and epidemiology best practices through continuous improvement professional development

· Perform other duties as assigned

Participates in agency disaster preparedness activities; may be required to report for work outside normal working hours during an emergency; available 24/7 for consultation related to bioterrorism/public health emergencies; meets all as outlined by the position’s Supervisor; completes other duties as assigned.

Knowledge of departmental goals, objectives, and operational procedures; principles and practices of public health and health promotion; human relations and culturally competent service delivery and diagnostic testing protocols and procedures. Skills and abilities to communicate efficiently both orally and in writing; define problems, collect and analyze data and draw valid conclusions; conduct research using appropriate methods to support data-driven decision making; prepare clear, concise, and accurate reports and documentation; establish and maintain effective working relationships with supervisors, colleagues, and clients and apply interviewing and communication techniques that ensure clear rights, informed consent, and confidentiality are maintained.

This job requires proficiency of computers skills including Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook), Adobe Reader, e-mail, electronic calendar, and internet research; ability to compile, consolidate and summarize information; exceptional knowledge and use of English grammar, spelling, written format and punctuation; effective verbal and written communication skills; ability to work independently and as part of a team both in a dependable manner; knowledge of community resources; be able to effusively deal with stress; ability to learn and use a computer and web-based reporting program for completing on-line reports; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other agency and organization representatives; knowledge and skills associated with detailed recordkeeping and reporting procedures; ability to meet multiple deadlines, excellent organizational skills, and adhere to confidentiality requirements.

· Frequently required to sit, stand, walk, talk, write, listen and read in English.

· The employee may infrequently be required to climb, balance, stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl, reach with hands and arms, lift and/or move up to 25 pounds.

· Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to focus.

· The noise level of the office is moderate. May occasionally be in environments with high noise levels.

· Involves travel by automobile to attend meetings with state agencies and community partners. Must have current driver’s license valid in the state of Ohio and access to a personal automobile.

Pay: $22.50 - $35.93 per hour
