About the Opportunity
A growing Houston-based energy technology and analytics company is seeking a Power Markets Forecasting Engineer to help develop the forecasting and benchmarking capabilities of a next-generation power-market analytics platform.
This is a hands-on quantitative engineering role focused initially on ERCOT. The successful candidate will build and improve forward-looking power-market models that combine market fundamentals, generation economics, grid constraints, load, renewables, fuel prices, and transmission conditions.
The role sits between power-market analytics, quantitative modeling, and software engineering. We are looking for someone who can turn market methodology into a reliable, testable forecasting engine—not simply analyze historical market data.
What You'll Do
Develop an ERCOT power-price and congestion forecasting engine using SCED-based and fundamental market concepts.
Model generator dispatch using heat rates, fuel prices, operating characteristics, outages, renewable output, and load.
Incorporate transmission constraints and power-flow outputs into market forecasts.
Build historical replay and back-testing frameworks to evaluate forecast performance.
Develop nodal, hub, basis, and congestion forecasts.
Integrate natural-gas and other relevant forward-price assumptions.
Work with power-systems specialists to incorporate grid topology and load-flow results.
Develop scenario and sensitivity capabilities around load, generation, outages, fuel prices, and transmission conditions.
Benchmark internal forecasts against historical outcomes and third-party forecasts.
Quantify forecast error, confidence, and model performance.
Work with software and data engineers to productionize models, APIs, data pipelines, and analytical outputs.
Clearly document methodologies, assumptions, limitations, and model changes.
Qualifications
Required
Bachelor's or advanced degree in engineering, economics, mathematics, computer science, operations research, statistics, or another quantitative discipline.
Strong understanding of wholesale electricity markets and generation economics.
Experience with power-market forecasting, production-cost modeling, dispatch modeling, congestion analysis, or related quantitative market analysis.
Strong Python skills and experience developing quantitative models.
Strong SQL and data-analysis skills.
Understanding of generator economics, including heat rates, fuel costs, variable costs, and dispatch.
Ability to work with large market and operational datasets.
Strong analytical judgment and ability to independently develop and test modeling approaches.
Preferred
Direct ERCOT market experience.
Pay: $130,000.00 - $170,000.00 per year
