General Function

  • Under the direct supervision of the Child Care Director, the Assistant Group Supervisor assists in the
  • management and operations of the Younger Years Child Care Center, a state licensed program, in accordance
  • with the DHS regulations and the YMCA Younger Years mission and policies. She/ He must be skilled in
  • working effectively with infants, toddlers, preschoolers and after school aged children, parents and other staff.

Know How

  • Must possess a high school diploma.
  • Must possess a degree in Early Childhood Education or in the Human Service Field, or a minimum of
  • two years’ experience related to the care and development of children or a combination of education
  • and experience.
  • Must be certified in Pediatric First Aid and CPR.
  • Must obtain Act 33, Act 34 and FBI Fingerprints.
  • Must attend 12 clock hours of training per year.
  • Must have fire safety training yearly.
  • Must have water training.
  • Principle Activities
  • Discuss any program concerns with the Child Care Director immediately.
  • Communicates problems with any area to the Child Care Director immediately.
  • Become familiar with and understand DHS State regulations and Keystone Star guidelines that Child Care must follow.
  • Enforce and follow DHS state regulations and Keystone Star guidelines in daily operations.
  • Assist in the preparation for the yearly state inspection by DHS.
  • Enforce all policies set forth in the Child Care Parent Handbook.
  • Create a positive, safe and secure environment for the children.
  • Ensure the safety of all children at all times. Provide a safe environment for children at all times.
  • Interact with the children at their level – both physically and emotionally.
  • Provide opportunities for the development of social, emotional and physical skills.
  • Participate in activities and play with the children at all times.
  • Be available to play or interact with the children at all times.
  • Directly supervise children at all times during all activities including free play. Do not leave children unattended.
  • Know the location of all children at all times. Know the number of children in your group and their names.
  • Monitor children during lunch, while moving children from one area of the building to another and while transporting them.
  • Develop open communication between the center and the parents, ex. schedules, memos, phone messages, parent concerns and conferences, etc. Greet children and parents in an enthusiastic manner.
  • Talk with parents when they arrive and communicate pertinent information.
  • Write accident and incident reports, as needed. Communicate this information with parents.
  • Write and distribute the monthly activities chart, in conjunction with the child Care Director.
  • Prepare and update the children’s files as needed.
  • Develop age appropriate expectations of the children.
  • Assist Child Care Director in the development of age appropriate rules for the children.
  • Be aware of the needs of all children in order to create an enjoyable program for all.
  • Plan developmentally appropriate activities.
  • Enforce established rules at all times. Follow these rules, as well, in order to set a good example.
  • Guide and discipline children in an appropriate manner. Time outs (no more than 5 minutes), cool down times, re-directions, and loss of privileges are to be used. It is never appropriate to call children names, hit or hurt them, tell them to shut up, swear at them, withhold food or affection, or yell at them.
  • Phrase directions in a positive manner rather than a negative one. For example: walk vs. don’t run, lower the noise level vs. don’t be so loud, stay on this side of the tree vs. don’t go over there.
  • Natural consequences are to be used at all times. If a child consistently tips his/her chair, remove it and have them stand. If a child spills juice because they were fooling around, have them help clean it up.
  • Use the YMCA values in your actions at all times in order to set a good example.
  • Do not engage in activities that limit your availability to the children or your ability to supervise the children. Such activities include, but are not limited to: reading the newspaper, talking on the phone for long periods of time, and talking to friends in the room.
  • Ensure that parents sign in/out their child.
  • Assist in updating the parent handbook each year.
  • Assist in other duties as requested by the Child Care Director.

Pay: $10.50 - $13.00 per hour
