What are the responsibilities and job description for the Public Health Nurse I, II, or III (DOQ) (Open Until Filled) position at Clallam County?
- May provide outreach and education to families and patients on a variety of topics including nutrition, chronic diseases, sexually transmitted diseases, vaccinations, substance use disorders, and other health related topics; mandatory reporter to Child Protection Services in situations that warrant reporting per law
- Organize and participate in conducting special group clinics including school health, inoculations, communicable disease control, and tuberculosis detection; participate in examinations, administering vaccines, reading skin tests, and drawing blood samples; maintain records; arrange for supplies as assigned
- Participate in immunization program as assigned; order supplies and vaccines for clinics; complete accountability reports and monitor appropriate use of vaccines by private medical providers within the county; answer provider and community inquiries
- Organize and participate in the administration of assigned programs including tuberculosis, communicable disease, immunization, syringe exchange, sexually transmitted disease, and children with special health care needs programs; ensure all Federal, State, and local mandates and requirements are met by the Health & Human Services Department.; amend program policies and procedures as standards of medical care change; provide direct service through clinics and provide consultative services to private medical providers
- Inform teachers, parents, and students about available health services and instructional materials; may serve as resource person to schools on health topics including class presentations as requested
- Work with Emergency Room staff and County Coroner for required opioid overdose reporting. Follow up with patient, physicians, and others as required
- Investigate and report incidences of communicable diseases in the County; perform and provide case finding, contact identification, notification, and counseling services to individuals with communicable diseases or health conditions; assist and encourage them in finding assistance or treatment beyond their present level; provide guidelines and treatment recommendations to private medical providers; provide vaccine or medication treatment to the public if indicated; research infectious disease issues to remain abreast of outbreaks or any changes in treatment or epidemiological practices
- May provide case management for children with special needs when service is requested; evaluate eligibility for federal, state, and local services and assist with the application process
- Participate in the department’s Public Health Emergency Planning and Response program and assist as needed
- Provide syringe exchange and related services including Naloxone training and distribution and Hepatitis C and HIV testing
- Collect data and assist in preparation of reports for assigned clinic or program; collect data for ongoing studies and research; maintain records
- Refer patients to other community agencies for further assistance as appropriate
- Provide community presentations and speak to groups about good health practices, infectious disease, and the services offered by the County Health & Human Services Department
- Participate in department activities related to the core public health function of community assessment, policy development and assurance
- Attend conferences, professional seminars and staff meetings as required

Education
- B.S.N. degree or related advanced nursing degree from an accredited college or university preferred. Associate Degree from an approved nursing program for RN required.
- Current Washington State Registered Nurse license.
- Public health education preferred such as Community Health B.S., or M.P.H (Public Health Nurse III only).
Experience
Public Health Nurse I - This is the entry level class in the Public Health Nurse series. Some professional nursing experience is desirable.
Public Health Nurse II - At least two years of public health nursing experience comparable to a Public Health Nurse I with Clallam County.
Public Health Nurse III - Minimum 5 years nursing experience in public health nursing or related field.
