What are the responsibilities and job description for the Noxious Weed Control Specialist position at Clallam County?
We are seeking a knowledgeable and motivated Noxious Weed Control Specialist to manage and coordinate integrated weed management projects across County-owned and managed lands. This position requires strong field experience, technical skills, and a passion for environmental stewardship. The ideal candidate will work with volunteers, citizens, and landowners to implement best practices for noxious weed control while fostering education and compliance.
- Coordinate and implement integrated weed management projects for the management of noxious weeds or invasive plant species of special concern on County owned or managed lands
- Serve as team lead and contact person for integrated weed management projects on County owned or managed lands
- Respond promptly to landowner and citizen requests for information and assistance or complaints about the management of noxious weeds on County lands
- Update and maintain relevant website information including treatment locations, landowner requests, and reporting
- Train and supervise a variety of volunteers and crews that may include Chain Gang or Community Service participants
- Facilitate rapid response weed control for new, high priority County infestations
- Assist with conducting field surveys, mapping weed infestations using GPS/GIS equipment in a variety of terrain and settings
- Carry out control of noxious weed infestations, including the use of herbicide, physical removal and any other control method as provided in a work plan
- Perform data management and reporting including database and ArcGIS data entry and analysis, as well as drafting project reports summarizing data and activities
- Communicate with landowners to notify them of weed infestations and regulatory compliance requirements, and to provide educational and technical services
- Conduct community outreach, public presentations, training and educational events as needed to effectively implement integrated weed management plans
- Manage “owner Will Control” and “Adopt A Patch” agreements
- Develop volunteer opportunities for weed removal projects, surveys and monitoring teams as resources allow
- Assist with other special projects, surveys, and control efforts, or other responsibilities as needed in the general noxious weed control program
Requires knowledge of the field of assignment sufficient to perform thoroughly and accurately the full scope of responsibility as illustrated by examples in the above job description
Education/Training
Bachelor’s degree with a major in plant biology, weed science, forestry, environmental science, natural science, weed identification and/or management or a related field
Experience
3-5 years’ experience in natural resource management work OR Master’s degree in a related field and 1-3 years of experience (Experience may be substituted for education on a year-for-year basis)
Necessary Special Requirements
- Possession of a Washington State Public Pesticide Operator License with an aquatic endorsement, or must obtain one within 30 days of hire. Additional licensing categories preferred.
