An Assistant Principal in a Tennessee public high school serves as an administrative leader, supporting the Principal in managing daily school operations, student discipline, instructional leadership, and community relations. This role requires an active Tennessee Instructional Leader License (ILL). High school assistant principals work an extended calendar and must be present for extensive after-hours event supervision, including athletic events, arts performances, and graduation ceremonies.
Core Responsibilities
- Instructional Leadership: Conduct teacher evaluations using the TEAM (Tennessee Educator Acceleration Model) framework, provide actionable feedback, and lead data-driven Professional Learning Communities (PLCs).
- Student Discipline & Attendance: Oversee student behavior management, enforce the student handbook, implement positive behavior interventions (PBIS), and manage truancy or attendance intervention plans.
- School Operations & Safety: Manage daily logistics, including master scheduling, substitute teachers, lunchroom supervision, transportation/bus duties, and state-mandated safety and fire drills.
- Special Populations Support: Serve as the administrative representative at 504 and Individualized Education Program (IEP) meetings to ensure compliance with federal and state special education laws.
After-Hours & Event Supervision Commitments
- Athletic Event Management: Act as the administrator-on-duty for evening home and away sports events to ensure safety, sportsmanship, and proper crowd control.
- School Community Events: Attend and supervise mandatory evening activities, including Parent-Teacher Conferences, Open House, Freshman Orientation, Prom, and Commencement ceremonies.
- Crisis Response: Remain on-call after hours to handle school emergencies, facilities issues, or student safety concerns in coordination with local law enforcement and the School Resource Officer (SRO).
Qualifications & Requirements
- Education: Master's degree or higher in Educational Leadership or Administration from an accredited university.
- Licensure: Valid Tennessee Instructional Leader License.
- Experience: Minimum of 3 to 5 years of successful certified teaching experience, preferably at the secondary level.
