7th Grade English Language Arts (ELA) Teacher - Soldiers Memorial Middle School

A 7th Grade English Language Arts (ELA) Teacher in a Tennessee public school is responsible for instructing middle school students in reading, writing, speaking, listening, and language conventions aligned with the Tennessee Academic Standards. The role requires driving high academic achievement, analyzing student data, and managing a structured classroom environment.

• Plan and deliver rigorous, standard-aligned lesson plans that foster critical thinking and literacy skills.
• Teach literature, informational texts, writing mechanics (argumentative, informative, narrative), and vocabulary.
• Differentiate instructional strategies to accommodate diverse learning styles, IEPs, and English Learners (EL).
• Integrate educational technology into daily lessons and learning management systems (LMS). 

• Administer and grade formative and summative assessments.
• Use current student data to track progress, monitor growth, and adjust future planning to target achievement gaps.
• Prepare students for state testing, specifically the TCAP (Tennessee Comprehensive Assessment Program).

• Create an inclusive classroom culture focused on high behavioral and academic expectations.
• Maintain active supervision and implement positive behavior interventions.
• Handle administrative duties like keeping accurate attendance and grade records. 

• Build proactive partnerships with parents and guardians through conferences, phone calls, and digital portals.
• Collaborate closely with grade-level teams, PLC (Professional Learning Community) groups, and special education teachers.
• Participate in district-level professional development and school duties (e.g., hallway monitoring, lunch duty).

• Attend and participate in after-school events, including Parent-Teacher Conferences, Open Houses, and Back-to-School nights.
• Support the school community by attending or chaperoning extracurricular events, such as middle school athletic games, dances, literacy nights, and award ceremonies.
• Attend after-hour staff meetings, Professional Learning Community (PLC) sessions, and district-wide professional development as required by the school calendar.
• Build proactive partnerships with parents and guardians through conferences, phone calls, and digital portals.
• Collaborate closely with grade-level teams and special education teachers.

• Education: Minimum of a Bachelor's degree in English, Middle School Education, or a related field.
• Licensure: A valid Tennessee Teaching License issued by the Tennessee Department of Education (TDOE) with an appropriate grade-level endorsement (e.g., Middle Grades English/Language Arts 6-8, or Elementary K-8).
• Compliance: Must pass a background check and child abuse registry screening as required by Tennessee law.

• Contract Length: Typically a 10-month contract (averaging 200 contract days).
