Required Credentials & Qualifications
- Licensure: A valid Tennessee Professional or Practitioner Teaching License.
- Endorsements: Must hold active Special Education Interventionist K-12 (codes 144 or 145) endorsement, or legacy Special Education Comprehensive K-12 (code 461) endorsements.
- Education: A minimum of a Bachelor's degree in special education or a related field from an accredited institution.
- Clearances: Passing result on a Tennessee Bureau of Investigation (TBI) / FBI fingerprint-based background check.
Core Job Responsibilities
Individualized Education Program (IEP) Management
- Act as primary case manager for a dedicated caseload of high school students.
- Write, implement, and legally monitor all student IEP goals, accommodations, and progress reports.
- Coordinate and lead formal IEP team meetings alongside administrators, parents, and related therapists
Adapted Instruction & Daily Living Skills
- Teach heavily modified, research-based lessons in high school English, math, science, and social studies.
- Provide physical and adaptive training to help students build independence in activities of daily living (ADLs).
- Design, implement, and evaluate Functional Behavioral Assessments (FBAs) and Behavior Intervention Plans (BIPs).
- Use diagnostic evaluation tools such as the Brigance inventory to track growth patterns.
Transition & Pre-Vocational Support
- Deliver targeted high school transition courses focused on community, independent living, and employment readiness.
- Oversee student placement and support in inclusive elective structures or vocational courses.
- Partner with outside adult disability programs and vocational rehabilitation entities to secure post-graduation services.
Classroom Supervision & Collaboration
- Direct, schedule, and mentor assigned educational paraprofessionals/teaching assistants within the self-contained room.
- Collaborate closely with speech, occupational, and physical therapists to integrate therapy targets into the classroom routine.
- Provide consultation strategies to general education high school teachers regarding classroom modifications.
