We are seeking an experienced Fabrication Superintendent to oversee the day-to-day operations of our fabrication department. This role is responsible for leading fabrication crews, coordinating production schedules, ensuring quality and safety standards are met, and maximizing productivity and efficiency. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in metal fabrication, welding, blueprint reading, and crew leadership, with the ability to plan work, solve problems, and hold teams accountable for performance.

 

 

Key Responsibilities

  • Oversee the day-to-day operations of the fabrication department, ensuring work is completed safely, efficiently, and according to schedule.
  • Plan, coordinate, and prioritize fabrication work based on project requirements, deadlines, manpower, and available equipment.
  • Supervise and lead fabrication personnel, including welders, fabricators, and laborers.
  • Assign daily work, establish priorities, and ensure crews have the materials, tools, equipment, and information necessary to complete their work.
  • Monitor production progress and make adjustments to manpower, workflow, and priorities as needed to meet project deadlines.
  • Ensure all fabricated products meet company, project, and customer quality standards.
  • Review drawings, blueprints, shop drawings, and project specifications to ensure fabrication is completed correctly.
  • Work closely with project managers, field personnel, engineering/design, and division leadership to coordinate fabrication requirements and resolve issues.
  • Identify and address production issues, material shortages, equipment problems, and other obstacles that may impact schedule or productivity.
  • Maintain accountability for crew performance, attendance, productivity, workmanship, and adherence to company expectations.
  • Train, coach, and mentor fabrication employees to improve technical skills, productivity, safety, and overall performance.
  • Assist with recruiting and onboarding fabrication employees and help identify staffing needs based on workload.
  • Ensure fabrication equipment, tools, and work areas are properly maintained and available for use.
  • Develop and maintain an equipment maintenance plan to ensure equipment is maintained, repaired, and life-cycled in the most cost-effective manner.
  • Monitor material usage and coordinate with purchasing or division leadership to ensure materials are available when needed.
  • Identify opportunities to improve fabrication processes, reduce waste, increase productivity, and improve overall job profitability.
  • Ensure employees follow all company safety policies, OSHA requirements, and required fabrication and welding safety practices.
  • Conduct regular safety and production meetings with fabrication personnel.
  • Maintain a clean, organized, and efficient fabrication shop.
  • Track and communicate production progress, manpower needs, material requirements, equipment issues, and other operational concerns to division leadership.
  • Assist with estimating, production planning, and project setup when needed by providing input on labor, materials, equipment, and fabrication requirements.
  • Support continuous improvement initiatives and help implement new processes, tools, and fabrication techniques that improve safety, quality, and efficiency.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by division leadership.

 

Qualifications & Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent required; technical training, welding education, or an Associate’s degree in a related field preferred.
  • Minimum of 5 years of experience in metal fabrication, welding, or a related construction/manufacturing environment.
  • Minimum of 2 years of experience leading fabrication crews or working in a supervisory role preferred.
  • Strong knowledge of welding, cutting, fitting, and general metal fabrication techniques.
  • Strong ability to read and interpret blueprints, shop drawings, and project specifications.
  • Proven ability to lead crews, assign work, manage priorities, and hold employees accountable.
  • Strong understanding of fabrication processes, tools, equipment, and materials.
  • Ability to identify production problems and develop practical solutions.
  • Strong organizational and time-management skills.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with employees, project managers, engineers, customers, and company leadership.
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Office and/or applicable construction or production management software.
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced production environment and manage multiple priorities.

 

Preferred Qualifications

  • Welding or fabrication certifications.
  • NCCER or other recognized welding/fabrication credentials.
  • Experience supervising a fabrication shop or production environment.
  • Experience with structural steel, miscellaneous metals, agricultural structures, or commercial construction.
  • Experience with CNC equipment, plasma cutting, saws, press brakes, or other fabrication equipment.
  • Experience with lean manufacturing, process improvement, or production efficiency initiatives.
  • OSHA safety training or other relevant safety certifications.
  • Experience working from CAD drawings or digital shop drawings.
