Trainee, Driver, Yard Class A-CDL

Essential Job Duties & Responsibilities

• Movement and spotting of trailers in a safe, efficient, timely, and legal manner.
• Deliveries to local warehouses, which may require on-road driving.
• Operate equipment, such as truck cab computers, CB radios, phones, or global positioning systems (GPS) equipment to exchange necessary information with bases, supervisors, or other drivers.
• Maneuver trucks into loading or unloading positions, following signals from the loading crew and checking that the vehicle and loading equipment are properly positioned.
• Perform basic vehicle maintenance tasks, such as adding oil, fuel, or radiator fluid, performing minor repairs, and/or washing trucks.
• Collect delivery instructions from appropriate sources, verifying instructions and routes.
• Hook and unhook trailers and secure cargo for transport using ropes, blocks, chains, binders, or covers. Wrap and secure goods using pads, packing paper, containers, or straps.
• Give directions to laborers who are packing goods and moving them onto trailers.
• Operate idle reduction systems or auxiliary power systems to generate power from alternative sources, such as fuel cells, to reduce idling time, heat or cool truck cabins, or provide power for other equipment.
• Install or remove special equipment, such as tire chains, grader blades, plow blades, or sanders.
• Follow special cargo-related procedures.
• Load and unload trailers and perform lifting, pulling, pushing, and carrying freight with loading-related equipment or other equipment as necessary.
• Remove debris from loaded trailers.
• Inventory and inspect goods to be moved to determine quantities and conditions.
• Complete all necessary paperwork and maintain records required under state and federal laws and regulations. Check all load-related documentation for completeness and accuracy.
• Ensure compliance of all operations with state and federal laws and regulations.
• Follow appropriate safety procedures.
• Represent the Company and the trucking industry in a professional manner.
• Perform other related job duties as assigned or required.

Required Qualifications

• A valid Class A CDL Drivers License is required.
• Clean driving record: No more than two (2) moving violations while operating a personal vehicle in the last three (3) years.
• Education: Completed driving course with an accredited and approved driving school.
• Regulations: Knowledge of all applicable DOT Regulations and Motor Carrier Safety Regulations.
• Compliance: Ability to satisfy FMSCA/DOT requirements including a clean drug and alcohol screen and a passing DOT physical.
• Communication: Strong communication skills with the ability to navigate interactions professionally.
• Organization: Ability to develop specific goals and plans to prioritize, organize, and accomplish work.
• Language: Must be able to read and speak the English language sufficiently to converse with the general public and respond to official inquiries to drivers.
• Age/Insurability: Must meet minimum age and insurability requirements (21 years of age or older) in accordance with company insurance policies and/or federal regulations governing commercial vehicle operation.
• Internal Candidates: If an internal employee within CJ Logistics, employee must be in good standing, complete internal onboarding requirements, and receive management approval.
• Program Enrollment: Must be actively participating in the Trainee Driver, Class-A CDL Program.

Physical Requirements

• Driving: Safely operate a commercial motor vehicle for extended periods.
• Agility: Climb in and out of trucks, trailers, and loading docks multiple times per shift.
• Lifting: Lift, pull, push, or carry up to 75 pounds as needed for loading/unloading.
• Movement: Squat, crouch, and reach intermittently throughout the shift (up to 2 hours).
• Mobility: Stand and walk up to 20% of the shift.
• Dexterity: Maintain manual dexterity and hand-eye coordination to operate vehicle controls.
• Cab Entry/Exit: Enter and exit the vehicle’s cab multiple times per shift (truck seats are generally 5-6 feet off the ground; requires climbing 2-3 steps outside the cab and 1 step inside the cab before seating).
• Sitting: Sit for extended periods while driving (up to 11 hours per day in accordance with Department of Transportation (DOT) regulations).
• Medical Certification: Pass and maintain DOT medical certification, including vision, hearing, and physical fitness standards.
• Testing: Participate in DOT and Company required alcohol and controlled substance testing program.
• Weather: Work in extreme weather conditions (heat, cold, rain, snow).

• Traffic: Varying traffic conditions, road hazards, and driving stressors.
• Facilities: Warehouse and loading dock environments, depending on delivery requirements.
• Hazards: Noise, vibration, and fumes from truck engines and other vehicles.
• Spaces: Occasional work in tight or enclosed spaces, including loading bays or truck cabs.
