Build hands-on experience while helping deliver safe, high-quality Transportation projects. Civil Science is seeking a Materials Testing Intern for the Summer of 2027 to join our team in Shelley, Idaho. This field-focused internship is a great opportunity to learn how construction materials are tested, documented, and evaluated on active roadway projects.

You’ll work alongside experienced technicians and engineers, gaining practical experience with soils, asphalt, concrete, and aggregates. This position will include travel to project sites, outdoor work, overtime, and varying schedules based on construction activities.

What You’ll Do

  • Perform field and laboratory testing on construction materials (e.g., soil, asphalt, concrete, and aggregates) in accordance with WAQTC standards.
  • Assist in sample collection, preparation, and analysis for quality control and assurance.
  • Document and report test results accurately.
  • Support engineers and technicians in evaluating material performance.
  • Follow safety protocols and industry best practices in a laboratory and field setting.
  • Maintain and calibrate testing equipment as needed.
  • Prior experience with construction materials testing in either a field or lab setting
  • Ability to lift up to 50 pounds repeatedly
  • Preference will be given to candidates who have:
    • WAQTC Certification
    • IQP Certification
  • Candidates must have a valid driver’s license and be able to pass both a criminal background check and driving record review
What You’ll Bring

  • Current enrollment in civil engineering, construction engineering, construction management, surveying, engineering technology, or a related program.
  • An interest in transportation, construction, surveying, materials testing, or public infrastructure.
  • A willingness to learn, ask questions, take initiative, and take ownership of your work.
  • Strong communication skills and a dependable, team-oriented approach.
  • A valid driver’s license and the ability to meet Civil Science driving requirements.
  • The ability and willingness to travel regularly throughout Idaho.
  • Basic computer skills, experience with Microsoft Office, AutoCAD, Bentley MicroStation, Bluebeam, or field data-collection tools is helpful but not required.
  • The ability to work outdoors in changing weather conditions, navigate uneven terrain, wear required personal protective equipment, and lift or carry field equipment weighing up to 50 pounds, with or without reasonable accommodation.
