Protects life and property by performing emergency aid duties, firefighting, and hazardous materials as well as fire prevention duties; drives the rescue, maintains fire equipment, apparatus, and facilities; and assists in training as requested.
Essential Job Functions:
- Assists in training new employees.
- Performs emergency response activities including driving emergency response vehicles; determines location; and handles traffic control devices while providing for the safety of other vehicles, pedestrians, and fire personnel.
- Drives rescues and other staff vehicles in emergency and non-emergency modes. (In accordance with departmental standards).
- Efficiently operates tools and equipment on all fire apparatus.
- Performs emergency aid as required through your Scope of Practice and Protocols for your level of EMS care.
- Performs firefighting activities including but not limited to laying hose, and performing fire combat, search and rescue, fire containment, and other extinguishment tasks.
- Performs salvage operations such as throwing salvage covers, sweeping water, and removing debris.
- Receives and relays fire calls and alarms; operates radio and other communication equipment.
- Properly collects and disposes of infectious waste generated at emergency scenes.
- Participates in fire training drills; attends classes in firefighting, emergency medical, hazardous materials, and related subjects.
- Trains with city and county fire companies for operational readiness.
- Participates in daily physical fitness training.
- Assists in developing plans for special assignments such as emergency preparedness, hazardous communications, training programs, firefighting, hazardous materials, and emergency aid activities.
- Assists in the delivery of public education programs for safety, medical, and fire prevention topics such as cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), basic first aid, and general emergency medical assistance awareness.
- Participates in fire drills.
- Participates in the inspection of buildings and other structures in fire prevention programs.
- Completes required EMS and/or fire reports.
- Documents emergency aid activity on proper forms as required by law and departmental standards.
- Assists in administrative activities as requested.
Other Essential Duties and Functions:
- Maintains and operates all equipment, apparatus, and facilities; performs minor repairs to department equipment cleans and washes walls and floors; cares for grounds around station; makes minor repairs; washes, hangs and dries hoses; and washes, cleans, polishes, maintains, and tests apparatus and equipment.
- Communicates effectively with private physicians and staff concerning patient treatment and disposition.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
