HVAC Technician I - $22.18 - $27.72

GENERAL PURPOSE:

The HVAC Technician I and II performs skilled technical work in the operation, maintenance, and repair of refrigeration, air conditioning, and heating equipment at various City facilities. This work is performed under close supervision - the incumbent is assigned duties according to specified procedures and receives detailed instructions; work is checked frequently and is reviewed through observation, completion of work orders, and review of results achieved.

HVAC Technician I

Operates, maintains, and repairs food refrigeration, water cooling, and air conditioning units and equipment by repairing, replacing, or adjusting worn or broken parts on condensers, compressors, and water and vacuum pumps; tests equipment for refrigerant leaks, repairs or adjusts valves, piping connections, fittings and couplings; removes and installs motors, thermostats and humidistats, adjusts expansion valves; adjusts or changes belts; replaces gaskets, hinges and hardware; adds gas to systems and units; checks gauges and makes inspection for preventative maintenance.

Inspects and adjusts refrigeration, air conditioning, and heating equipment and controls to ensure efficient operations.

Maintains and repairs heating systems.

Monitors and controls BAS using Tracer and or other systems.

Assists with maintenance and repair duties including; painting, carpentry and masonry work, minor electrical and plumbing maintenance.

May assist with installation of new air conditioning and refrigeration units and run necessary duct work.

Work schedule requires the ability to work mandatory Emergency Standby Duty and nights, weekends and holidays, as needed.

Performs other duties as assigned.

HVAC Technician II

Interpret technical drawings to ensure field equipment is installed and functioning properly

Perform complex HVAC-related tasks including updating controls.

Inspect, maintain, and repair DX units and chilled water systems.

Test and Calibrate sensors with certified calibration tools. Use software tools from the BAS to modify/adjust analog and binary points. Clean and Inspect sensor housing and remove any debris impacting such.

Review and test after inspection for proper air and water flow operations.

Identify, evaluate, and make recommendations related to equipment conditions in order to prevent and/or minimize equipment failures and downtime.

Direct and work in conjunction with contracted service providers for related HVAC systems, diagnostics, repairs, and replacements.

Participate in major HVAC component replacement and evaluation of complex system problems.

Perform seasonal overhauls and transitions of systems to and from heating/cooling.

Ensure proper care in the use and maintenance of equipment and supplies; promote continuous improvement of workplace safety and environmental practices.

Manage HVAC Projects including: overseeing HVAC installation and maintenance contractors; coordinating with contractors and industry professionals to diagnose, troubleshoot, and provide recommendations for unit replacement and or efficiency gains.

Coordinate with HVAC controls contractor to determine inadequacies and plan for future improvements.

Update and keep records for all HVAC units, including service history and warranties.

Manage other projects as assigned utilizing the following project steps: project initiation, project planning, project execution, project monitoring and control, and closing.

Ability to perform a variety of semi-skilled manual tasks.

Ability to use a variety of hand, power, and small engine tools.

Ability to operate equipment and vehicles in a safe manner under various conditions.

Ability to remain on call, 24 hours a day, seven days a week for after-hours repairs, emergencies, and other related concerns.

Ability to establish and maintain effective relationships with employees, supervisors, city officials, and the general public.

Ability to communicate information tactfully and impartially, both in person and in writing with all staff, city officials, and the general public.

Ability to demonstrate proficiency in the City of Winter Park Core Competencies.

Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions and keep accurate records.

This position is performed with general knowledge - the incumbent is generally familiar with information contained in relevant source documents or information in a particular subject field; has ability to use relevant sources to obtain specific or supplemental information.

HVAC Technician II

Ability to remain on call, 24 hours a day, seven days a week for after-hours repairs, emergencies, and other related concerns.

Ability to establish and maintain effective relationships with employees, supervisors, city officials, and the general public.

Ability to communicate information tactfully and impartially, both in person and in writing with all staff, city officials, and the general public.

Ability to demonstrate proficiency in the City of Winter Park Core Competencies.

Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions and keep accurate records.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

HVAC Technician I

High School Diploma or equivalent; supplemented by a minimum of one years of experience in the operation and maintenance of refrigeration and air conditioning systems.

HVAC Technician II

High School Diploma or equivalent; supplemented by a minimum of three years of experience in the operation and maintenance of refrigeration and air conditioning systems.

An equivalent combination of education, training, and experience, which provide the necessary knowledge, skills abilities, and other competencies required for the position may be considered.

CERTIFICATIONS, TRAINING, SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:

HVAC Technician I

Possess and maintain a valid State of Florida Driver's License, Class E or higher.

Must possess Universal EPA Section 608 certification; OR Type I EPA Section 608 certification AND Type II EPA Section 608 certification; OR Type I EPA Section 608 certification at date of hire with the ability to obtain Type II EPA Section 608 certification within 2 months of hire.

Within 90 days of employment, you must be able to pass the P-card test and be responsible for any p-card issued.

HVAC Technician II

Possess and maintain a valid State of Florida Driver's License, Class E or higher.

Must possess Universal EPA Section 608 certification; OR Type I EPA Section 608 certification AND Type II EPA Section 608 certification.

Within 90 days of employment, you must be able to pass the P-card test and be responsible for any p-card issued.

NOTE: All required certifications must be current at the time of application and maintained in an active state as a condition of continued employment.

OTHER REQUIREMENTS:

Physical

This is heavy work requiring the exertion of 100 pounds of force occasionally, up to 50 pounds of force frequently, and up to 20 pounds of force repetitively to move objects; work requires climbing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, and grasping.

Ability to ascend/descend stairs, scaffolds, and ladders.

Ability to traverse about a variety of environments and obstacles throughout the city, with or without reasonable accommodation.

Ability to remain stationary at job sites for extended periods of time and repetitively operate related equipment for repairs/maintenance.

Ability to position oneself to work in confined or difficult-to-reach spaces.

Ability to manipulate objects, demonstrate small, precise movements, and operate necessary equipment such as small hand and power tools repetitively or continuously.

Environmental

Tasks may require frequent exposure to adverse environmental conditions including inclement weather, sun, extreme temperatures, odors, dirt and dust, loud noises, hazardous chemicals, etc.

Sensory

Tasks require the manipulation of objects and demonstration of small, precise movements, the ability to detect and distinguish various features of one's surroundings, and the ability to effectively communicate and exchange information with others.
