What are the responsibilities and job description for the Sanitation Equipment Operator - Central Business District position at City of Winston-Salem?
Performs intermediate semiskilled work operating and maintaining sanitation equipment, collecting refuse along assigned route, and related work as apparent or assigned. Work is performed under the limited supervision of the Sanitation Operations Supervisor. Continuous oversight is exercised over Sanitation Laborer.
- Drives sanitation vehicles, namely rear loader trucks; collecting garbage bags, dumping refuse carts and black cast iron cans throughout the Central Business District.
- Responsible for working all events that take place in the downtown areas which include, but are not limited to; music festivals, culinary arts festivals, wine festivals, cultural heritage events, university/college parades, black theatre festival, and cycling events
- Operates equipment required for loading, compressing, and dumping; collecting garbage bags and black cast iron cans, placing lids back on cans, dumping carts and ensuring lids are closed after collection, cleaning carts and placing them where needed for events,
- Operating leaf blowers and Billy Goat vacuums, picking up limbs throughout the downtown areas.
- Reports violations of refuse ordinances to supervisor.
- Cleans and maintains refuse truck and equipment.

Education and Experience: High school diploma or GED and moderate experience in sanitation operations, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: Thorough knowledge of related industry, organization, and department policies, practices, and procedures; thorough knowledge of related industry, organization, and departmental legal guides, recommendations, best practices, ordinances, and laws; thorough knowledge of industry standard and department specific equipment; ability to perform continuous heavy manual work at a rapid pace; ability to operate automotive equipment safely and effectively; ability to understand and follow specific oral instructions; ability to supervise the work of unskilled helpers; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with associates and the general public.

Upon hire:
Valid commercial driver's license with Class B endorsement.
The candidate chosen for this position will be required to work extended hours during special events (seven days a week), six to seven months out of the year.
