WWTP OPERATOR I OR II

Position Title: Wastewater Plant Operator I or II
Department: Wastewater Treatment
Reports to: Wastewater Plant Chief Operator
Category: Non-Exempt
Pay Grade: Operator I: 14 ($17.67-$25.83), Operator II: 16 ($19.49-$28.48)

Position Summary:
Under general direction, performs semi-skilled work in the operation of a wastewater treatment plant and related equipment and makes mechanical repairs and adjustments to equipment as required. Work varies, requires interpretive judgment within prescribed standards and procedures.

Tasks:

  • Inspects and operates electrical control boards, motors, pumps, meters, chemical feeders, and related equipment.
  • Calculates dosage and adds chemicals such as chlorine to disinfect and deodorize water and other liquids in accordance with prescribed standards of the laboratory.
  • Operates, lubricates, and adjusts pumps and machinery.
  • Performs plant mechanical work.
  • Performs restaurant grease trap inspections.
  • Performs call-out duties.
  • Works a regular shift plus a rotating standby.
  • Maintains pumps and bearings.
  • Regulates valves and observes flow dials.
  • Keeps daily log of shift operations.
  • Draws samples for laboratory tests and analyses.
  • Makes routine chemical analyses of samples.
  • Conducts visual inspections of working apparatus and grounds performing preventive maintenance on equipment.
  • Operates trucks and tractor mowers.
  • Disposes of sludge.
  • Receives and handles complaints.
  • Performs custodial work in the cleaning and maintenance of equipment and facilities.
  • Establishes and maintains effective working relationships with other employees, superiors, other agencies, and the public.
  • Deals with the public in a manner that positively promotes the image of the City and handles complaints tactfully.
  • All employees of the City of Winfield are subject to immediate callout when an emergency, disaster or breach of homeland security occurs. Such call to respond and assist may involve those activities to his/her regular job responsibilities and incorporate other non-job-related duties as necessary and required of an employee. An employee’s response to these matters may require the working of unusual, long hours over an extended period of time with infrequent breaks or rest periods.

Experience and Education:

  • Any combination of education and experience equivalent to graduation from high school.
  • Ability to obtain a State Class II Operator's certification after one year of appointment.
  • Must have or obtain a valid commercial driver's license within 6 months of employment.


Physical Requirements:

  • Ability to perform moderate physical work and ability to lift 100 pounds and to lift and carry up to 50 pounds.
  • Ability to stand, walk, sit, bend, climb, push, pull and perform similar body movements.
  • Possesses hand/eye coordination adequate to perform lab work and equipment maintenance duties.
  • Ability to talk and hear in person, by telephone and two-way radio.
  • Ability to see and read instructions and gauges and prepare logs and reports.
