Description
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Receives requests for calls for Police, Fire and Rescue assistance, emergency and non-emergency, determines nature of the call, the location of the call and dispatches the appropriate personnel and equipment.
- Provides pre-arrival instructions for Fire and Rescue medical calls.
- Operates Computer Aided Dispatch (CAD) and other computer systems that entail the handling of confidential information.
- Dispatches other City department personnel and equipment as requested for the City Public Works Department, Utilities Department, Social Services and Magistrates.
- Other duties as assigned
Requirements:
- Must be able to work all shifts, days of the week and holidays
- Any combination of education and experience equivalent to a High School diploma or General Education Degree (GED)
- Attendance at a two week formal training school is required
- Possession of a valid and appropriate driver's license
- Ability to be certified as a Virginia Criminal Information Network (VCIN) and National Criminal Information Center (NCIC) operator and Virginia Department of Criminal Justice Services (DCJS) Communications Specialist
- Ability to obtain certification in CPR and Priority Dispatch Emergency Medical Dispatch (EMD) within two (2) years
- Successful completion of position release tests and on the job training program within twelve (12) months
- Must maintain 8 hours of yearly Continuing Education Hours specific to Communications
- Some knowledge of the methods of operating the communication systems
- Some knowledge of radio terminology system and teletype procedures
- Some knowledge of the geography of the City and County and location of major landmarks
- Ability to operate all communication consoles and computer terminal
- Ability to communicate with coworkers and the public under stressful conditions
