The City of Williston is seeking to hire a Fire Captain to serve the Williston Fire Department.   


Summary: 

The incumbent is responsible for providing supervision over ambulance, engine or truck company personnel and operations in emergency and non-emergency occurrences. The Captain will supervise personnel and activities during emergency and non-emergency situations. The Captain develops personnel through training, education and on the job training. The position of Captain is responsible for performing job duties in an accurate manner in order to protect life and property within the City of Williston.

Essential Job Duties and Responsibilities:

Essential responsibilities and duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:

 

  • Responds to emergency incidents as a company supervisor. Directs company tactics, strategies, and tasks.  Assumes control of an incident by establishing a command organization. 
  • Formulates an action plan, communicates clearly and directs activities under extreme and dangerous conditions and compressed time frames.
  • Makes emergency mediation decisions, entry with fire crew and perform all firefighting and rescue tasks and ensure scene safety.
  • Trains new and current personnel on all phases of emergency service delivery, schedule training evolutions, educational demonstration.
  • Has oversight and supervision for proper operation and maintenance of all EMS and firefighting equipment and fire station upkeep.
  • Completes training records to properly document training as required. 
  • Fills out incident reports to accurately document what has taken place at the scene of an emergency. Complete incident notes, fire reports, and after-action reports in a timely manner.
  • Evaluates effectiveness of company individuals and adjust/train as required.
  • Is involved in special projects, equipment evaluation and program development.
  • Functions as an effective and dependable role model for the company personnel.
  • Conduct pre-fire planning, site tours, inspections, hydrants, schedule and document hose and pump test.
  • Responsible for training employees; planning, assigning, and directing work; appraising performance, rewarding, and disciplining employees; addressing complaints and resolving problems.
  • Safely deliver crew members and equipment to the scene of all types of emergencies; EMS, Fire, Hazmat, MVA, extrication, Technical Rescue and Aerial Operations.
  • Maintains familiarity with buildings and streets in immediate coverage area and outlying areas of the City.
  • Maintains professional relationships with the community and City personnel.
  • Perform all work duties and activities in accordance with City policies and procedures.
  • Perform other related duties as required or assigned.

Education and Experience:

  • High school diploma or GED equivalent; and four (4) years of total satisfactory work experience in the Fire/EMS Field; or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.
  • Two years (2) of supervisory/management experience
  • One year (1) of experience as a Lieutenant 

Certificates, Licenses, Registrations:

  • Must possess a valid Driver’s License
  • CPR & First Aid
  • Firefighter I & II standards certificate
  • Hazardous Material Operations & Awareness certificate
  • NIMS ICS 100, 200, 700 & 800 certifications
  • Airport Rescue Firefighter
  • Fire Officer I & II
  • Fire Instructor I & II
  • Fire Inspector I & II
  • Hazardous Materials Technician
  • Incident Safety Officer
  • AEMT or Paramedic license
  • Completion of the Captain task book

Desired Certifications: 

  • Fire Instructor III or ISFSI Training Officer Credential
  • ISFSI Live Fire Instructor

Training opportunities available to obtain desired certifications for incumbents who have met the minimum certificate, license, and registration requirements.


Language Skills:

Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules and standard operating guidelines.  Ability to write routine reports and correspondence. Ability to speak effectively before patients, crews and groups of customers or employees of an organization.

 

Mathematical Skills:

Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as discounts, interest, commissions, proportions, percentages, area, circumference, and volume. Ability to apply concepts of basic algebra and geometry.

 

Reasoning Ability:

Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.

 

Internal Communications: 

Regular contacts within the department and with other departments as needed. Must be able to read and write formal communications with correct grammar, punctuation, and spelling.
 
External Communications: 

Regular contacts with third parties, outside representatives, community groups, and mutual aid partnerships as needed.
 

Use of Equipment and/or Computers: 

Regular use of technology and equipment for job-related functions will be required including but not limited to computers, phones, printers, operation of various department vehicles including fire and EMS apparatus. 


Other Skills and Abilities: 

Ability to utilize both internal and external resources to obtain information and data necessary to carry out routine assignments and special projects. Must have ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with management and staff. Must be able to work both independently and in a team environment, using a high level of professionalism and critical thinking. 
 
Physical Demands: 

Standing in work areas, walking between work areas, and driving to various locations will be required. There will be a regular expectation to pull, push, reach, walk, stand, sit, crawl, kneel, bend and have the use of hands and fingers, use of both eyes for sight, including ability to distinguish color and distance, hearing, extensive use of arms and legs to climb on top of, under, in and around equipment and facilities; work in proximity and use of computer screens; verbally communicating, and moving objects. The employee must be able to physically move, lift, carry and manipulate up to 100 pounds.

  • Physical Agility

Work Environment:

While performing the duties of this job, the employee frequently works in and outside of various locations and weather conditions within the community. The noise level in the work environment is loud. Essential functions require maintaining condition necessary for sitting and standing for prolonged periods of time. Employee will work at all Williston Fire Department facilities and is expected to keep work areas clean, safe, and functional. Employee may be required to work extended hours including evenings and weekends. Long distance patient transfers are likely.

 

Work schedule is generally a regular duty schedule of 48/96 or based on organizational need. Overtime is occasionally available and expected, based on organization need. Regular, predictable, and dependable attendance is required.
