What are the responsibilities and job description for the Probation Officer position at City of Wichita?

This is professional administrative work serving as an aid to the Municipal Court Judges. Duties involve working in the courtroom, and primarily outside of the courtroom monitoring the compliance of probationers with judicial orders. Work is directed and reviewed by a supervisor.

Workdays and Hours - Monday- Friday - 8:00am - 5:00pm

  • Interprets probation requirements ordered by the judges.
  • Monitors those on probation by reviewing their requirements on a weekly, biweekly or monthly basis to ensure compliance with judicial orders.
  • Maintains ongoing contact with agencies to whom probationers are referred in order to verify progress.
  • Maintains records of contact, action taken and recommendations concerning assigned probationers.
  • Takes defendants into custody and escorts prisoners.
  • Interviews and assesses prisoners and defendants.
  • Conducts pre-sentence investigations.
  • Composes reports which give in-depth profiles on defendants seeking probation.
  • Teaches court-ordered classes, such as the Wichita Intervention Program (WIP), Anger Management and domestic violence classes.
  • Completion of work assignments may require the operation of a vehicle.

  • Other related duties and responsibilities may be assigned as needed.
  • Ability to identify the appropriate treatment for offenders
  • Ability to identify symptoms of alcoholism, addiction, and/or mental illness and make appropriate recommendations
  • Ability to escort defendants, pat them down, subdue violent or unruly persons by methods requiring personal physical force (generally with the assistance of others)
  • Ability to use a computer to access and update defendant and probationer records
  • Ability to read, interpret, and update records of probationer requirements and activities
  • Ability to stand for two to three hours or sit for four hours at a time
  • Ability to develop and maintain effective working relationships with associates, representatives of other organizations, and the public
  • Ability to communicate clearly and effectively, both orally and in writing
  • May require ability to pass assessment test for bilingual skills
  • May require ability to acquire and maintain a valid Kansas driver's license
  • An employee shall not pose a direct threat to the health or safety of other individuals in the workplace
Required Experience and Training

  • A bachelor's degree in criminal justice, public administration, behavioral, social science or related fields required. 
  • 1 year of experience as a probation or parole officer is preferred.
  • 1 year of experience writing detailed reports and maintaining accurate records preferred.
  • Must be a U.S. Citizen and pass a Kansas Bureau of Investigation (KBI) background investigation.
Preferred Experience and Training

  • 1 year of experience as a probation or parole officer.
  • 1 year of experience writing detailed reports and maintaining accurate records.

 Offers of employment are contingent upon passing a pre-employment physical, which includes drug screening. Must also pass a Kansas Bureau of Investigation background investigation.
