What are the responsibilities and job description for the Part Time Neighborhood Inspector position at City of Wichita?
Workdays and Hours: This is a part time position from Monday - Friday, no more than 20 hours per week. Exact shift and hours will be determined at hire.

- Review of Short Term Rental regulations.
- Review and approval of Short Term Rental licenses.
- Inspects business establishments such as pawnbrokers, carnival amusement rides, dance halls, private clubs, home occupations, itinerant merchants, secondhand dealers, and clairvoyants for compliance with occupational license laws of the City.
- Inspects temporary signs for conformance to appropriate codes.
- Investigates and inspects various locations for appropriate use and occupancy as provided in the City zoning ordinance.
- Follows up inspections for violations and secures compliance with codes and laws.
- Answers inquiries and complaints over the phone or at the counter.
- Writes reports and prepares notices of violations, citations and/or uniform criminal complaints as required.
- Employee may specialize in all or some of the above enforcement duties as assigned by the employee supervisor.

- Knowledge of the municipal minimum zoning ordinance, sign ordinance, and appropriate occupational license laws.
- Ability to detect violations; confer with property owners in regard to requirements of City ordinances related to the immediate problem, and to work out a satisfactory solution to gain full compliance with codes, using firmness and tact.
- Ability to traverse uneven terrain and/or rotted or uneven floor surfaces and ascend and descend steps; and bend and stoop and/or crawl to look into or under building crawl spaces, cellars, attics and foundations.
- Ability to take inspection report notes in the field and/or operate a 35 mm camera to document violations.
- Ability to develop and maintain effective working relationships with associates, employees of other Departments, representatives of other organizations, and the public.
- Ability to communicate clearly and effectively, both orally and in writing.
- Ability to work occasionally in the evenings or on weekends.
- Ability to acquire and maintain a valid Kansas driver's license.
- An employee shall not pose a direct threat to the health or safety of other individuals in the workplace.
- High School Diploma or GED
- One year of experience conducting inspections for construction, zoning, signage, business licensing, or housing inspections.
- One year of experience working directly with the public in a role that required enforcement, conflict resolution, or regulatory compliance.
- One year of experience in building construction, construction contracting, inspection work, or the legal field.
- Must pass the departmental Zoning/Licensing Level I test and Housing Code Enforcement test within six months of employment.
- A valid driver’s license.
- Must be legally authorized to work in the United States without the need for sponsorship.
- Formal training or coursework in zoning regulations, municipal code enforcement or urban planning.
- Two years of experience in construction work, such as residential or commercial building, contracting, or structural inspections.
Please note that this position is part of a random drug testing pool, and employees are subject to random drug testing in accordance with company policies and applicable laws.
Starting pay for current City employees will be determined by City of Wichita policy or applicable bargaining unit agreement.
Offers of employment are contingent upon passing a pre-employment physical, which includes drug screening, and upon satisfactory evaluation of the results of a criminal record check.
