POSITION PURPOSE / IMPORTANT APPLICATION INFORMATION

The Instructor IV position is responsible for teaching patrons 15 years and older in a variety of enrichment programs. This position will plan and lead the classes. Classes are recreational-based and may be educational and/or activity-related. Recreation instructor staff have the primary responsibility of ensuring the safety of program participants. This position is classified as safety-sensitive due to the nature of the work. Employees in this position may be subject to random drug testing and/or heightened supervision per the personnel policies and rules.

The full salary range for this position is stated above. The starting range of pay is dependent on qualifications and experience of each individual candidate.

Job Specific Functions

Essential Job Functions, Duties, Responsibilities, and Tasks

  • Plans and organizes class activities
  • Provides a safe environment for patrons 15 years and older
  • Provides fundamental instruction on enrichment programs
  • Keeps class moving at an appropriate pace
  • Instructs and/or assists instruction of various recreational and/or educational programs
  • Sets up all equipment/supplies before class and cleans up after class
  • Provides good customer service to patrons
  • Monitors participants and enforces rules, regulations, and safety precautions to prevent accidents
  • Actively participates in all cleaning, sanitizing, and disinfecting procedures of all classroom supplies, furniture, etc., on a daily basis
  • Maintains regular and punctual attendance

Other Duties and Responsibilities

  • Attends staff meetings and trainings
  • Ensures classroom, materials, and equipment are clean, well-maintained, and safe at all times
  • Administers first aid and CPR as necessary
  • Promotes the City of Westminster in a positive aspect to patrons and the community
  • Reviews instructional content and methods to assess strengths and weaknesses, and to develop recommendations for course revision, development, or elimination

Incumbent is accountable for all duties of this job and other projects and responsibilities may be added at the City’s discretion.

Position Requirements/Working Conditions/Pre-employment Requirements

Education, Experience, Skills, Formal Training, Licenses, and Certifications

Required

  • Must be at least 18 years old
  • Two (2) years of experience teaching American Sign Language
  • Teaching experience working with people of all ages or work in similar settings
  • First Aid, CPR and AED certification within 30 days of hire

Preferred:

Any equivalent combination of education, training and experience, which would provide the required knowledge and skills, may be considered.

Physical Requirements

This position requires a moderate degree of physical stamina and strength, including the ability to:

  • Frequently stand, sit and walk through a multi-level facility
  • Occasionally squat, bend, kneel, twist, climb, balance and reach over head
  • Occasionally lift, carry, push or pull items weighing up to 50 pounds
  • Frequently use hands and fingers for fine manipulation; occasionally use light and firm grasp
  • Frequently see objects up close to perform office tasks and far away to observe activity for safety hazards or problems
  • Constantly use hearing to interact with guests and staff and recognize trouble outside of view
  • Occasionally use sufficient physical strength, stamina and agility to perform emergency work in various capacities

WORKING CONDITIONS

Work is mostly performed indoors, with some outdoor activities included. At times, there may be exposure to periods of high activity as well as exposure to outdoor weather conditions including summer sun and temperatures that could exceed 100 degrees. Indoor and outdoor work is performed in a high public use, multilevel recreation facility where loud noise and multiple events and activities at one time may cause a distraction. Exposure to periods of high activity and stress under demanding conditions. The position requires a great deal of communication with City employees, the public, and outside agencies.

Recreation equipment, arts and crafts materials, technology such as iPhones, iPads, and/or AV equipment.

Benefit Package

The City of Westminster does not participate in the Social Security system. In lieu of Social Security contributions, the city contributes to a 401(a) defined contribution plan on your behalf.

401(a) Contribution Rates

Employee Mandatory Contribution: 11.5% of your base pay. Contributions are pre-tax and fully vested.

Employer Contribution: 12% of your base pay.

Employer Contribution Vesting Schedule

  • Less than 3 years - 0%
  • 3 to 4 years - 60%
  • 4 to 5 years - 80%
  • Over 5 years - 100%
  • For employees age 55 and older, the employer contributions are 100% vested
