TREATMENT PLANT OPERATOR - DPW GENERAL STATEMENT OF DUTIES AND
RESPONSIBILITIES: This is skilled work in operating wastewater treatment
processes, machinery, and equipment. Work involves responsibility for
operating specialized systems, machinery and equipment in the
preliminary, primary and secondary treatment of wastewater. Work is
performed in accordance with standard, well-defined operating procedures
under general supervision of an operator of higher grade who reviews
work through inspections and monitoring of plant operations. Limited
Supervision May Be Exercised Over Assigned Helpers. SUPERVISION
Receives direct supervision from Foreman and/or Deputy Superintendent in
Foreman?s absence. May exercise limited supervision of lower titles and
seasonal laborers. ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITES: The essential
functions or duties listed below are intended only as illustrations of
the various type of work that may be performed. The omission of specific

assigned wastewater treatment and sludge processing and disposal
systems, machinery and equipment to control the flow, processing, and
treatment of wastewater, sludge, and effluent. Operates bar screens,
grit separator equipment, sludge, grit and skimming collection, transfer
and disposal equipment, sludge thickening equipment, belt filter presses
and gravity belt thickeners. Performs in-house Laboratory sample
collection & testing work to meet NPDES permit requirements following
written standard operating procedures is required. Operates pumping
stations, conveyors, pumps, blowers, heating boilers, and systems,
compressors, tanks, channels and related auxiliary and appurtenant
machinery and equipment. Monitors gauges, meters and control panels;
observes variations in operating conditions; interprets meters, gauge
readings and test results in relation to processing requirement.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE: Experience in the operation of municipal
wastewater treatment machinery or equipment; or considerable experience
in the operation of closely related industrial process, water treatment
or similar equipment and machinery. Graduation from a standard high
school or vocational school supplemented by college level or technical
school courses in wastewater treatment or closely related fields.
Massachusetts DEP certification as Wastewater Treatment Plant Operator
License Grade 4-M or higher. Class D driver?s license. SKILLS AND
QUALIFICATIONS: Considerable knowledge of the principles, procedures,
practices, methods and techniques of operating preliminary, primary and
secondary wastewater treatment machinery and equipment. Working
knowledge of occupational hazards and standard safety practices and
procedures of wastewater treatment plants. Working knowledge of Water
Pollution Control Federation manuals of practice, including safety
manuals, pertinent to the class. Ability to safely operate a variety of
specialized wastewater treatment machinery. Ability to understand and
follow written and oral instructions, including plans and sketches.
Ability to read meters, gauges and recorders, to make indicated
adjustments, and to prepare operating reports. Ability to detect and
correct malfunctions of assigned wastewater treatment machinery and
equipment. Ability to establish and maintain effective working
