LIFEGUARD II (PART-TIME TEMPORARY)

Job Summary

Join the City of West Hollywood as a Temporary Lifeguard II. This is an excellent opportunity for those with a passion for swimming and recreation.

Temporary Lifeguard II performs lead lifeguard duties and a variety of aquatics functions, including: monitoring and coordinating daily operations and maintenance of the aquatics facilities, develops and coordinates programming and projects; conducts certification and training processes of all aquatics staff. Performs lifeguard functions, including: performing appropriate rescues and lifesaving skills, teaching swimming lessons and water aerobics, assisting in coaching of City swim team and triathlon team, collecting fees, providing customer service to pool patrons. Performs pool maintenance duties, including: testing water, facility cleaning and related maintenance duties.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS: (All responsibilities may not be performed by all incumbents.)

• Assists in carrying out lead staff member responsibilities, including: facility coverage; training in job skills; assisting in resolving problems; and reporting problems to the supervisor.
• Performs observations for aquatic staff, provides structured feedback and documentation.
• Conducts staff trainings including CPR/AED, first aid, and other emergency procedures.
• Teaches swim lessons and exercise classes, coaches swim and triathlon teams, and instructs other aquatic programs.
• Completes and compiles course records, evaluations for aquatic staff observations, certifications, and communicates course objectives using the StarGuard Elite and HydroApps portal.
• Performs customer service functions; answers phones and provides information; receives fees, processes receipts, takes registration information; and oversees program registration and waitlists for aquatic programs.
• Serves as pool lifeguard and is responsible for the safety of patrons while using pool facilities and enforcing safety protocols.
• Coordinates the safety and maintenance of pool facility and equipment, monitors pool water temperature and chemistry and maintains records of daily water conditions and health and safety conditions; inspects and observes facility to ensure maintenance of pool, equipment, and all mechanical systems of the pool; applies State guidelines and regulations governing the operation of aquatic facilities. Keeps supervisory staff apprised of upcoming maintenance.
• Performs facilities operations and maintenance functions, including: basic equipment maintenance; and vacuuming, dusting and cleaning restrooms, exercise rooms and other public areas.
• Receives complaints/comments and independently identifies solutions. Actively works with customer problems to ensure the greatest level of satisfaction within policies and procedures.

Minimum Qualifications Required

Education and Experience:

• Three (3) years of experience as a Lifeguard and Swim Instructor.
  
  

Licenses And Certifications

All certifications listed below will be certified through the City of West Hollywood and must be maintained throughout employment in order to remain in the position.

Current Valid Certification Is Required In The Following

• Lifeguard Certification
• CPR Certification
• AED Certification
• First Aid Certification
• Lifeguard Instructor Certification (Must complete within six months of hire)

Other Requirements:

• Must be 18 years of age and older by September 7, 2026.
• Availability to work a flexible schedule including opening and closing shifts, weekends and holidays.
• Candidates 18 years of age or older must complete a CPR Code 5164 Background Questionnaire.
• Candidates selected for hire will be required to successfully complete a City-paid physical exam and background check (live scan).

Abilities

• Ability to recognize and respond quickly and effectively in emergencies. Enforce all aquatic facility policies, rules, and regulations. Inspect the facility and report any unsafe conditions or equipment to the supervisor. Maintain fitness level (swimming skills, strength and endurance).
• Ability to perform the required aquatic physical fitness, including swim 300-yard swim, treat water for a minimum of 5 minutes, lift and/or move over 100 pounds and retrieve/lift heavy swimmers and stamina to sit and/or stand for long periods of time.
• Ability to exert moderate physical effort in maneuvering facility or aquatic equipment, typically involving some combination of stooping, kneeling, crouching and crawling, carrying, pushing and pulling. Ability to lift and carry up to 50 pounds.
• Vision (which may be corrected) and hearing within normal range to be able to see and hear adults and children in life and/or health and safety endangering situations.
• Ability to recognize and identify individual characteristics of colors, forms, sounds, odors, and textures, associated with job related objects, materials, and tasks, as well as human appearance and behavior.
