The City of Wentzville is seeking a skilled and motivated Professional Engineer to join our Department of Utilities. This position is responsible for providing high-level engineering services to support the planning, design, construction, and maintenance of the City’s utility infrastructure. The role includes leading and/or participating in capital improvement and maintenance projects, asset management initiatives, public engagement, and technical support for other City departments. This position requires strong independent judgment, initiative, and the ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously.
Essential Job Duties
- Deliver respectful, professional, and positive service in all interactions with coworkers, internal/external customers, community members, and the public.
- Foster a positive and productive work environment while ensuring compliance with City and departmental policies, procedures, goals, and objectives.
- Prepare and/or assist with contracts, specifications, and bid documents; manage the RFQ process for consultant selection; oversee consultant contracts and schedules; review and approve consultant invoices.
- Serve as project manager for assigned capital improvement projects, overseeing all phases including design, public involvement, environmental review, right-of-way acquisition, utility coordination, bidding, construction, inspection, and project closeout for sanitary, potable water, and solid waste projects.
- Evaluate utility collection, distribution, and treatment systems; develop short- and long-range plans for system sustainability, resiliency, expansion, and improvements.
- Provide engineering designs and cost estimates for the Department of Utilities and other City departments.
- Monitor consultant work for compliance with City codes, design criteria, standards, policies, schedules, and budgets.
- Assist in the plan review and approval process for private commercial and residential developments impacting the City’s utility systems.
- Offer engineering and construction support to other City divisions and departments.
- Develop and update engineering design standards and specifications for City utilities.
- Prepare and monitor budgets, ensuring efficiency and fiscal responsibility.
- Address utility-related engineering and infrastructure concerns from residents and businesses.
- Serve as a subject matter expert, providing technical expertise and guidance to team members and other City staff.
- Participate in both routine and complex projects, contributing to multiple initiatives as needed.

Job Qualifications – Education, experience, and training that are required or desirable in order to effectively perform the job at the time of hire. An equivalent combination of education, training, and experience will be considered. Additional requirements and/or substitutions may be requested and require the approval of HR.
- A bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering or a related field is required.
- Additional experience in the field may be considered in lieu of a degree.
- A minimum of 5 years of experience in Civil Engineering, Public Works, Construction, or a similar work environment is required.
- Additional job-related advanced degrees or certifications may be considered in lieu of experience.
- A valid driver’s license is required.
- Missouri Professional Engineer License, or the ability to obtain it within 12 months of employment, is required.
