The Civil Engineering Intern supports the Public Works Engineering team by assisting with engineering, infrastructure, and capital improvement projects that serve the community. This position provides hands-on experience in municipal engineering operations including project planning, field inspections, data analysis, and engineering documentation.
The intern works under the supervision of professional engineers and public works staff to gain exposure to the planning, design, construction, and maintenance of public infrastructure such as roads, stormwater systems, water and wastewater utilities, and public facilities.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Typical responsibilities may include but are not limited to:
- Assist engineering staff with design, review, and documentation for municipal infrastructure projects.
- Conduct field inspections and site visits to support construction oversight, asset management, and maintenance assessments.
- Collect and analyze engineering data, measurements, and field notes.
- Assist with preparation of engineering drawings, maps, and reports using CAD, GIS, or other engineering software.
- Support Capital Improvement Program (CIP) planning and project tracking.
- Review contractor submittals, plans, and construction documentation.
- Assist with storm water management, drainage studies, or utility mapping projects.
- Support traffic studies, pavement condition assessments, or infrastructure inventories.
- Help maintain engineering records, databases, and project files.
- Participate in meetings with engineers, contractors, and public works personnel.
- Perform other related duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
- Currently enrolled in an ABET-accredited Civil Engineering, Environmental Engineering, or related program
- Completion of at least one year of engineering coursework preferred
- Basic understanding of engineering principles related to transportation, water resources, or utilities
- Ability to interpret engineering drawings and technical documents (preferred)

Compensation and Schedule
