DEFINITION:
Under general supervision, performs various semi-skilled maintenance and unskilled labor work related to Mid-Way Regional Airport working for the City of Waxahachie, or other related areas. Performs a variety of technical tasks relative to assigned areas of responsibility. Performs other duties as assigned.

CHARACTERISTICS:
This is the entry thru journey level class in the Maintenance Worker series. Employees within this class are distinguished from the Senior Maintenance Worker by the performance of the full range of duties as assigned, with no supervisory responsibility. Employees at this level receive only occasional instruction, assistance or supervision as new or unusual situations arise, and are fully aware of the operating procedures and policies of the work unit.

Duties and Responsibilities

The duties listed below represent the various types of work that may be performed. The omission of specific statements of duties does not exclude them if the work is related or a logical assignment to this class.

  • Participate in the repair and maintenance of Airport, streets/roads, Airport Operations Area, including operating various equipment in the completion of assigned tasks.
  • When assigned to Airport: Perform various tasks related to the maintenance and repair of airport projects including mowing, weed eating, tilling, and spraying perimeter fence; trim and plant flowers and other plants; repair irrigation systems; pick up trash, hangar/building repair, runway lights and clean bathrooms.
  • Operate various light equipment including mowers, pickup truck, chainsaw, weed sprayer and other equipment as needed.
  • Perform duties during special events to ensure area is clean, safe and supplied for participants
  • Maintain and make minor repair to assigned vehicles, tools and equipment; report major repair needs.
  • Adhere to safe work practices and procedures.
  • Respond to public inquiries in a courteous manner; provide information within the area of assignment; resolve complaints in an efficient and timely manner.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

  • Operational characteristics of various maintenance equipment and tools.

  • Operate a variety of maintenance equipment in a safe and effective manner.

  • Interpret and apply Federal, State and local policies, laws, and regulations.
  • Understand and follow oral and written instructions.
  • Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work.

Requirements

Education, Training and Experience:
  • High School Diploma or GED
  • One year of general maintenance experience.
Licenses and Certificates:
  • A valid State driver license is required at the time of appointment and must be maintained throughout employment.

Manual dexterity to use hands to handle, feel or operate objects, tools or controls; reach with hands and arms; and perform repetitive movements of hands or wrists; operate a motor vehicle. The employee is frequently required to lift up to 50 pounds unaided. Specific vision abilities required for this job include close vision and the ability to adjust focus.

While performing the duties of this class, an employee uses written and oral communication skills; reads and interprets data, information and documents; analyzes and solves problems; uses math and mathematical reasoning; performs highly detailed work; deals with multiple concurrent tasks; and interacts with others encountered in the course of work, including frequent contact with customers and/or the public and dissatisfied/abusive individuals.

Work Environment:
Field environment, exposure to inclement weather conditions; noise, dust, grease, smoke, fumes, gases; potentially hazardous equipment.
