Lifeguard

DEFINITION

Responsible for the safety and satisfaction of pool patrons through quality customer service; enforcement of pool rules and regulations and assistance with general pool maintenance. This is a seasonal position with no benefits.

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS

Receives direction from the Pool Supervisor and the Director of Parks and Recreation.

• Responsible for safety and satisfaction of pool patrons through quality customer service.
• Provides emergency assistance such as rescue or first aid as needed in and around pool.
• Assists with general pool maintenance.
• Enforce pool rules and regulations
• Maintain organized and clean pool facilities
• Provide customer service, at concessions and admissions
• Other duties as assigned
  
  

EMPLOYMENT STANDARDS

Knowledge Of

• Operations, services and activities of a swimming pool.
• Occupational hazards and applicable safety precautions.
• CPR and general life saving techniques
• English usage, spelling, grammar and punctuation.
• Pertinent Federal, State and local laws, codes and regulations.
  
  

Ability To

• Accurately use life preserving equipment
• Handle and balance a cash drawer
• Interpret and apply Federal, State and local policies, laws, and regulations.
• Understand and follow oral and written instructions.
• Work flexible schedule, Tuesday through Sunday.
• Work independently in the absence of supervision.
• Follow all safety rules and regulations of the Parks and Recreation department.
• Interpret, explain, and enforce departmental policies and procedures.
• Interpret and explain city policies and procedures.
• Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.
• Establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work.
  
  

Minimum Qualifications

Education, Training and Experience:

• High School Diploma or GED.
• Previous lifeguard experience preferred, but not required.
  
  

Licenses And Certificates

• Possession of, or ability to obtain, an appropriate, valid Lifeguard, CPR, and First Aid certification.
  
  

WORKING CONDITIONS

Outdoor environment with exposure to extreme temperatures, mechanical, chemical, and electrical hazards.
