THE DEPARTMENT
The City of Visalia Building Maintenance Division is part of the City’ Parks and Recreation Department and plays a large and active role in the Visalia community. The Facilities Maintenance Division manages the maintenance of City buildings, parking structures, and recreation facilities and equipment. The Division oversees in-house custodial services, coordinates, and oversees the work of third-party contractors and consultants. They also work with other City Departments to plan and develop new building projects and remodel existing facilities.
THE POSITIONThe City of Visalia is recruiting for a Building Maintenance Service Worker. This role is responsible for maintaining 31 City facilities, which include approximately 380,000 square feet of interior building space, as well as Transit-owned camping trailers used during the Sequoia season, Transit equipment, and bus stops. Bus stop duties may include the installation and removal of signs, shelters, benches, trash enclosures, solar panel repairs, pressure washing, custodial services, and general cleanup as needed. The position will also involve a wide range of trade work, including carpentry, mechanical, HVAC, electrical, locksmithing, painting, plumbing, and general construction tasks within City facilities. Independent decision-making is required, particularly when responding to repair needs, and handling interdepartmental requests in accordance with established policies and procedures. The Building Maintenance Service Worker will also be responsible for maintaining records and preparing related paperwork, correspondence, reports, maintenance logs, and work orders.
THE IDEAL CANDIDATE
The ideal candidate will be a self-starter with the ability to work independently while staying in communication with their supervisor. This position requires a great deal of proactive thinking, problem solving, organization and safety awareness. Serving as a “jack of all trades,” it is desirable that the incumbent have a diverse background in maintenance and construction skills including basic plumbing, painting, electrical and carpentry repairs and maintenance. The ideal candidate will be a team player that pays attention to detail and has the ability to develop a thorough understanding of City policies and processes.
EXPERIENCE AND EDUCATIONAny combination equivalent to experience and education that could likely provide the required knowledge, skill and abilities is qualifying.
- One year of maintenance experience in a related field.
- Possession of a valid California Driver’s License by time of appointment.

PHYSICAL STANDARDS
Positions in this class require an ability to perform heavy physical work with prolonged standing, walking, bending, stooping, climbing, lifting and carrying loads weighing up to 90 pounds. Positions may also involve working outdoors, resulting in exposure to the weather.
