The City of Virginia Beach is looking for a dedicated Traffic Signal Electronics Technician II to join our team and ensure the smooth operation of our traffic control systems.
As a Traffic Signal Electronics Technician II, you will play a crucial role in troubleshooting and repairing traffic control devices, maintaining data communication equipment, and performing both corrective and preventive maintenance on traffic signal control systems.
Responsibilities will include:
Read and understand schematics, site plans, maps, and engineering drawings.
Troubleshoot or repair problems regarding traffic control devices, data communication equipment, and cables.
Must understand the menu-driven platform that most Electronic and Computer devices utilize to navigate within the device.
Performs corrective and preventive maintenance on traffic signal control equipment to install new and maintain existing traffic signal installations.
Under general supervision, construct new testing equipment and modify existing test equipment to constantly have state-of-the-art testing equipment.
Under general supervision, installs and tests traffic control equipment in new or modified traffic signal installations to ensure operational accuracy.
Performs preventive maintenance of existing traffic signal installations to identify defects and ensure the continued proper functioning of signal equipment operations.
Performs preventive and corrective maintenance required to maintain the computerized traffic signal system.
Prepares technical reports as required; prepares a list of materials needed.
Perform preventive and corrective maintenance of traffic control equipment to install new and perform corrective maintenance on all types of traffic signal control equipment, including electromechanical, solid-state, and microprocessor-based devices.
Install and test traffic control equipment in new or modified traffic signal installations to ensure operational accuracy.
Under supervision, design and construct new test equipment and modify existing test equipment as required.
Prepare technical reports and recommendations regarding traffic control as required.
Perform preventive and corrective maintenance required to maintain the computerized traffic signal system.
Assist in training subordinates to increase their skill levels.
Perform other job duties requiring skills, knowledge, and physical requirements as demanded by those duties described or less. Individual assignments will be determined by the supervisor based on the current workloads and department needs.
The Ideal Candidate will have the following knowledge, skills, and abilities:
Knowledge of traffic control signal system maintenance and operations.
Knowledge of City, state, and federal standards and codes applicable to traffic control practices and safety.
Knowledge of electrical, electronic, and microprocessor theory and application.
Skill in performing electrical and electronic maintenance and repair of traffic control equipment.
Skill in the operations and maintenance of all tools and diagnostic test equipment used in traffic signal control equipment maintenance and repair.
Ability to supervise necessary safety practices.
Ability to follow technical instructions, either verbal or written.
Ability to communicate ideas and information both verbally and in writing.
Ability to operate all testing and fault diagnostic equipment to perform corrective maintenance on all traffic control equipment.
This position is ALPHA 1 and is required to work in excess of their normally scheduled days/hours during all inclement weather (flooding, hurricanes & snow), and/or in response to short-term department needs and/or City-wide emergencies.
This position requires individuals to be on a rotating weekly on-call/stand-by duty for responding to emergency calls regarding malfunctioning traffic control devices.
**Commercial Driver’s License required–Class A or B (VA or NC). **
CDL Hiring Bonus - The $4,000 CDL (Class A or B) Hiring Bonus is for newly hired employees only. The bonus will be paid in three increments during the first year of employment.
$1,000 with first paycheck
$1,000 first pay period following six-month interim eval (with "meets expectation" performance rating)
$2,000 at conclusion of probationary period (with "meets expectation" performance rating).
