What are the responsibilities and job description for the Legal Investigator position at City of Virginia Beach?
The Office of the Commonwealth's Attorney is responsible for prosecuting those charged with violating the criminal laws of Virginia in Virginia Beach. We are seeking a part-time Legal Investigator to effectively assist trial prosecutors in securing needed witnesses, documents, and other evidence necessary to the trial of a criminal case including witness interviews, witness location, interviewing defense witnesses, securing search warrants and other legal process, securing records and their authentication, as well as providing testimony in court when required.
The minimum requirements for this position are High school diploma or GED plus ten (10) years experience in fields providing the required knowledge, skills, and abilities, such as criminal justice, law enforcement or related field.
In this position, the legal investigator will exercise discretion and effectively act as primary investigator on cases assigned by the Commonwealth's Attorney or Chief Deputy Commonwealth's Attorney not initiated by the Virginia Beach Police Department. such as alleged violations of the Virginia Comprehensive Conflict of Interest Act, allegations of corruption by a public employee or official or the use of deadly force by or against a police officer. Perform other job duties as required.
Preferences for this position include:
- Knowledge of Virginia Criminal Code
- Experience securing documents/evidence for trial
- Experience interviewing witnesses
- Experience locating missing witnesses
- Experience testifying in court
- Experience as a lead investigator on complex criminal investigations
- Experience in investigative report writing
- Familiarity with Virginia Court Systems
