The City of Virginia Beach is recruiting for a Historic Planner I to support the Planning Commission and Historical Review Board.
Duties of this position include:
- Serve as staff liaison to various City Council appointed boards, commissions, and committees.
- Prepare and present reports and projects for public hearings to various boards, commissions, and committees.
- Answer questions and assists applicants with the submittal of Certificate of Appropriateness applications to the Historical Review Board for new construction, additions, alterations, exterior maintenance and repair, signs, and demolitions for properties located in historic and cultural districts.
- Conduct field evaluations and assessments.
- Perform research and proposal review for Historical Review Board agenda items to provide the required information for a complete review; evaluates proposals for consistency with design standards and review guidelines; and makes recommendations based on research and evaluation.
- Prepare reports and maps on topics related to historic preservation and historic resources.
- Act as liaison between community groups, property owners, government agencies, and elected officials in coordinating preservation projects and plans.
- Develop or manages the development of planning studies and reports that support and enhance the City’s Historic Preservation Plan.
- Provide information to the public regarding the historic preservation program.
- Assist with the development of architectural and design guidelines related to historical character and integrity.
- Assist with management of the local historical register.
- Manage or assists with management of contracted historic resource survey, identification, registration, and context development projects.
- Assist with preparation of grant applications for supplemental funding for historic preservation program projects.
- Evaluate or assist in the evaluation of re-zonings, ordinance amendments, conditional use permits, variances, and other proposals.
Ideal Candidate:
- Bachelor's/Masters in related field
- Municipal/State/Federal government experience
- Experience giving presentations to appointed/elected bodies
- Experience facilitating meetings
- Experience applying design guidelines for projects
- Experience assisting management of consultant-based projects
- Experience with public community outreach
- Experience with historic preservation
