SUMMARY: Participates in the repair/replacement/maintenance work on all City of Vidor streets.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

  • Operates many varieties of heavy equipment, motor vehicles, provides preventative maintenance on all equipment assigned. Must have ability to operate equipment safely and skillfully in and around traffic, construction sites and work areas.
  • Assists the Drainage Department when needed.
  • Participates in the construction and maintenance of city streets and drainage projects as instructed by Supervisor of Street/Drainage Department.
  • Assists in the manufacturing and installation of street/informational/safety signs as needed.
  • Assists in the patching of City of Vidor streets as needed.
  • Employee may be required to operate more than one piece of heavy equipment in an eight-hour period.
  • Ability to stand for long periods of time to flag traffic and/or patch roads or streets.
  • May be required to work in Sanitation Department when understaffed.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE:

High school diploma or equivalent required and/or minimum of 1 year experience in road construction and practices.

LANGUAGE SKILLS:

Ability to read, analyze, and interpret City policies and procedures, written instructions, general correspondence; MSDS safety manuals; traffic signs and warning labels.

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS:

Basic math skills for reviewing and proofreading work orders.

REASONING ABILITY:

Prioritizing assignments, problem-solving, comparative abilities to determine the most effective allocation of the City’s people and resources.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand, walk, sit, use hands to handle or feel objects, tools, or controls, reach with hands and arms, stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl, talk or hear, and taste or smell. The employee is occasionally required to climb or balance.

The employee must regularly lift and/or move up to 25 pounds, frequently lift and/or move up to 50 pounds, and occasionally lift and/or move up to 100 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.

WORK ENVIRONMENT:

Most job tasks performed outdoors; exposure to extreme temperatures and weather conditions, possible exposure to cleaning chemicals, insecticides, pesticides and herbicides, dirt and dust. Works in or near road traffic; with power equipment and heavy equipment.

MACHINES, TOOLS, EQUIPMENT AND WORK AIDS:

Power tools and hand tools, push mowers, front line mowers, edgers, trimmers, pruning tools, chainsaws, air blowers, chippers, hydro-mulch machines, City pickup truck, and pesticide/herbicide sprayers, tractors, flatbed trucks, trackhoe, gradall, maintainer, dump trucks, and other heavy equipment.

PROTECTIVE EQUIPMENT REQUIRED:

Hard hat as needed, safety glasses, gloves, steel toe boots, protective outer wear, orange vests and safety cones, lifting belts (other personal protective equipment provided as needed).

OTHER REQUIREMENTS:

Class B (CDL) Texas Driver’s License with acceptable driving record.

INTERPERSONAL:

Ability to communicate professionally with employees, other City departments, vendors, supervisors, and salespersons.
