The City of Verona, Department of Public Works is recruiting an Engineering Technician.  The Engineering Technician is responsible for managing municipal, utility, and transportation construction projects. This position provides oversight of all phases of assigned projects, from the design stage through field inspection, contract administration, and final documentation. Project types may include, but not limited to: transportation improvement and expansion projects, traffic signal installation, street rehabilitation, utility construction (sanitary sewer, stormwater, and water systems), traffic control, and new infrastructure development. These positions reports to the Construction Engineer.

  1. Review various types of municipal infrastructure construction drawings and provide feedback.
  2. Inspect multiple aspects of construction work on active job sites.
  3. Provide recommendations for the approval of contractor payments and work order changes.
  4. Assist in the administration of construction contracts.
  5. Assist in coordinating pre-construction meetings with contractors.
  6. Prepare inspection reports during and after construction.
  7. Monitor general job site safety practices to ensure compliance with OSHA regulations.
  8. Prepare project as-built drawings and assist GIS staff in updating asset inventories upon completion of public infrastructure projects.
  9. Coordinate field quality control testing of construction materials.
  10. Assist in preparing construction cost estimates for future projects.
  11. Assist in the development of project designs and preparation of contract documents.
  12. Maintain and update construction detail drawings.
  13. Research and resolve issues encountered in the field.
  14. Support the Building Inspection Department by inspecting major sewer and water connections for commercial and multi-family projects.
  15. Inspect hydrant leads and water service lines 6 inches or larger, and sewer laterals 6 inches or larger.
  16. Perform other duties as assigned.

Additional Responsibilities:

  1. Assist in supervising seasonal employees during inspection of construction and maintenance projects.
  2. Review and help draft contract specifications for municipal public works projects.
  3. Verify compliance with quality management programs for infrastructure projects.
  4. Ensure adherence to City of Verona specifications, detail drawings, and design standards.
  5. Serve as a primary point of contact for municipal construction projects.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  1. Knowledge of design and construction techniques related to transportation and municipal construction projects, including materials and products commonly used.
  2. Ability to review and interpret construction documents for transportation and municipal projects, including WisDOT standard specifications and details from the Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD).
  3. Knowledge of how to measure installed quantities and evaluate contractor pay applications.
  4. Ability to coordinate effectively with internal and external project teams.
  5. Strong verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to interact professionally both virtually and in person with clients and colleagues.
  6. Ability to clearly and concisely express technical concepts.
  7. Problem-solving skills and the ability to deliver solutions under pressure, particularly during critical construction stages.
  8. Strong organizational, analytical, and time management skills with a high level of attention to detail; self-motivated with a strong work ethic.
  9. Ability to manage project schedules, oversee multiple projects simultaneously, provide clear direction to contractors, and organize and maintain electronic and paper project files.
  10. Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications, including Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
  11. Ability to interpret and use data from ArcGIS mapping applications.
  12. Ability to operate field survey data collection equipment, such as Trimble or equivalent systems.
  13. Ability to use CAD software to assist in preparing project designs.
  14. Ability to operate standard office equipment, including computers, tablets, and telephones.
  1. Knowledge of municipal infrastructure construction techniques.

Education and Experience:

Required Education and Experience: 
  • A minimum of one (1) year experience in the construction industry (or equivalent) is required.
  • Associate’s Degree in civil engineering technology or related field is required. 
  • Additional work experience may substitute for formal education on a year for year basis.

Preferred Education and Experience:
  • Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering, Construction Management, or similar field of study is preferred.

Additional Requirements:
  • Must possess a valid Wisconsin driver’s license.
Work Conditions and Physical Requirements:

  • Must be able to safely handle, transport, and work with general construction materials weighing up to 50 pounds, including lifting from floor to overhead height.
  • Work is performed in a variety of outdoor environments and is subject to all weather conditions.
  • May be exposed to elevated noise levels typical of construction sites and heavy machinery.
  • Must adhere to all applicable safety policies and procedures at all times.
