What are the responsibilities and job description for the METER READER position at City of Vero Beach?
Under close supervision, reads and re-reads water meters; turns water services on/off and performs related duties as assigned.

Management reserves the right to add, modify, change or rescind work assignments as needed.- Reads water meters on assigned route using a hand-held computer device.
- Re-reads meters to ensure accuracy.
- Turn on/off water meters as directed on service orders.
- Performs various duties to assist customer service including, cleaning meter boxes that may be filled with dirt, responding to hazards, and trimming bushes preventing accurate meter reading. Delivering notification of non-payment letters.
- Turn water meters on/off due to a suspected leak or customer request. Pull and reinstall meters due to theft of services. Replace damaged water box lids.
- Assist in investigating high bills or suspected leaks.
- In absence of City mail clerk, assist in afternoon mail delivery.
- Drives City vehicle to and from work locations, keeps inventory of items needed to perform job and maintains cleanliness of truck and tools.
- Observes standard operating procedures and safety practices and reports hazards observed in the field.
- Knowledge of City policies and departmental standard operating procedures.
- Knowledge of meter and street locations.
- Knowledge of tools and equipment used to read meters.
- Skill in using hand tools such as wrenches, screwdrivers, shovels, and meter box keys.
- Skill in identifying hazardous situations.
- Skill in mechanical aptitude and problem solving.
- Skill in customer relations and handling irate citizens.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with supervisors, co-workers, vendors and the general public.
- Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.
- Ability to accurately read and record numbers.
- Ability to walk 10-15 miles daily at a reasonable pace.
- Ability to frequently enter and exit vehicles to accomplish meter reading.
- Exposure to potential physical harm, infectious disease, wild and domestic animals, reptiles, spiders, and insects, including bees, insecticides and/or chemicals.
- Works outside in extreme weather conditions such as heat, wind, and rain.
- Performs manual tasks, including stooping, kneeling and walking for extended periods of time.
- Must be able to lift and carry up to 50 lbs.
- Must be able to wear PPE required to perform the essential functions of the job.
- City vehicles (truck), radio, hand held computer, meter key, small hand tools, etc.
Graduation from High School or equivalent preferred. Six (6) months of work experience involving manual labor for extended periods in an outdoor environment; or an equivalent combination of training and experience.
Previous meter reading experience preferred.
LICENSES/CERTIFICATIONS:
Possession of a valid Florida Driver's License, Class E.
