What are the responsibilities and job description for the DPW Utility Worker position at City of Vassar?
GENERAL STATEMENT OF DUTIES:
To perform manual labor and a variety of skilled and semi-skilled activities involving public works, water system, sanitary collection system, parks, tree maintenance, cemetery and perform other related work as required.
Applicants must possess a CDL B with air brakes.
SUPERVISION RECEIVED:
Work is performed under the immediate supervision of the Deputy Director of Public Works or his/her designated official.
TYPICAL EXAMPLES OF WORK:
An employee in this class may be called upon to do any and/or all the following: (These examples do not include all of the tasks which the employee may be expected to perform.)
- Construct, paint, erect and repair street and traffic signs.
- Prepare for internment and closure at the cemetery.
- Trim trees, chip brush and remove tree stumps.
- Perform other manual labor, skilled and semi-skilled tasks involving general
maintenance activities, public works and other municipal activities.
- Operate various sewer cleaning machines and catch-basin cleaners.
- Install, inspect and maintain storm and sanitary; catch basins and sewer lines.
- Operate various equipment to install and repair water lines.
- Service, install and flush fire hydrants.
- Operate various type of hand held tools.
- Operate air compressors, spray equipment, jackhammers, backhoe, front end loader, brush chipper, street sweeper, large and small dump trucks, and various other types of vehicles and power-driven equipment.
- Update and maintain records, maps, and other pertinent information
- Respond to emergency call-ins related to locating City infrastructure, using several types of electronics.
- Perform other duties as assigned by the City.
QUALIFICATIONS:
-EGLE Drinking water licenses or ability to obtain
- Graduation of an accredited high school; technical training is desired
- Some experience in heavy labor and/or public works activities
- Possess and maintain a valid Michigan CDL, Class B with air brakes and have a safe driving record.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
-Rotating weekly on-call
- Maintain regular punctual and predictable attendance and work overtime as required.
- Ability to understand and carry out oral and/or written instructions.
- Good knowledge of occupational hazards and safe working practices.
- Ability to perform heavy manual labor for extended periods of time, in all types of weather, under various working conditions and must occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 lbs.
- Ability to use several types of equipment involved in public works maintenance activities.
- Knowledge of the principles, practices, materials, procedures, and methods of public works construction.
- Ability to work effectively with other employees and the public.
Job Type: Full-time
Pay: $20.89 - $25.87 per hour
