  • POSITION SUMMARY

This position assists with the operation of the water distribution system and equipment and operate plant and equipment to treat wastewater in compliance with United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the State of Kansas. Maintain transportation infrastructure and drainage systems in city right-of-way following current safety standards. and assists with manual labor and maintenance of other departments. This employee should possess mechanical and communication skills. All Levels of experience and certification are encouraged to apply with pay rate matched to corresponding title.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTION
Conduct daily rounds to monitor all Wastewater Treatment Plant (WWTP) and Water equipment and make minor adjustments as needed to ensure equipment is working to meet standards and functioning within required limits and perform monitoring/analysis of statistical information, including sampling for State quality standards.

  • Assist with installing and maintaining water services, and preventive maintenance at plant and lift stations, including sludge hauling as well as meter reading.
  • Clean, paint and make repairs to ensure Water and Wastewater facilities are clean, neat and in serviceable condition. Maintain grounds at the plant and lift stations to ensure they are clean and neat. Assist with the mowing of roadsides and parking areas and cut brush and trees using mowers, tractors, chain saws and weed eaters.
  • Repair and maintain equipment in shop to keep it in working order.
  • Assist with the removal of ice and snow using trucks, loaders and salt/sand spreaders to enable traffic to move as safely as possible.
  • Assist with the sweeping and cleaning of streets and right-of-ways using street sweepers and manual labor to maintain appropriate appearance.

MARGINAL FUNCTIONS

  • Assists other departments as the need arises;
  • Performs other duties as deemed necessary or assigned.
  • POSITION REQUIREMENTS-ALL LEVELS *

EDUCATION: High school diploma or GED required. A valid Class A commercial driver's license, with a tanker endorsement and air brakes, or ability to obtain within 12 months of employment is preferred. Tactful verbal and written communications skills are required.

TECHNICAL SKILLS: Must have a general knowledge of mechanics, wastewater testing equipment, wastewater collections maintenance and operation, wastewater treatment, minor electrical work, and computers with that ability to operate and comprehend Microsoft Office products, and SCADA systems.

Ability to use laboratory equipment, understand the results of tests and be able to perform adjustments as required. Ability to demonstrate flexibility in work environments, performing a variety of frequently changing tasks.

WORKING CONDITIONS: Some adverse working conditions exist within this position. Exposure to hazardous chemicals, heavy machinery, excessive noise, heights, and work in confined spaces is expected. Occasional nights/weekend hours may be required.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: Manual labor including lifting and carrying heavy objects, and the ability to operate heavy machinery is required daily in this position. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions.

_WATER/WASTEWATER OPERATOR I - (Salary Range: $19.50 to $27.00 / hour depending on level ) _
_ _EXPERIENCE: 1 to 2 years of experience as water or wastewater operator or in a related field is required.

Must have a minimum Class 1 Water or Wastewater Certification from KDHE or obtain within two (2) years of employment. Must maintain the license by continuously meeting renewal requirements as required by KDHE. Ten hours of training every two (2) years is currently required.

_WATER/WASTEWATER OPERATOR 2-
_ _EXPERIENCE: 3 years of previous experience as water or wastewater operator or in related field is required. Education can supplement experience.

Must have a minimum Class 1 Water or Wastewater Certification from KDHE and obtain a class 2 Water or Wastewater Certification within two (2) years of employment. Must maintain the license by continuously meeting renewal requirements as required by KDHE. Ten hours of training every two (2) years is currently required.

_WATER/WASTEWATER OPERATOR 3 -
_ _EXPERIENCE: 4 years of experience as water or wastewater operator or in a related field is required. Education can supplement experience.

Must have a minimum Class 3 Water or Wastewater Certification from KDHE or obtain within two (2) years of employment. Must maintain the license by continuously meeting renewal requirements as required by KDHE. Ten hours of training every two (2) years is currently required.
